What are the best colors for night time smallmouth fishing? Heading up to north Alabama this weekend to visit my wife's family. Her uncle fishes semi-pro FLW and Stren and I'm sure he'll want to go smallmouth fishing on wilson or pickwick. We always use hair jigs but I have never caught any on them in the 3 times I've been. I was thinking of trying tubes or grubs but not sure of the color. Straight black or pumpkin or white or what.

I haven't had a whole lotta luck night fishing for smallies.  I have caught some on the midnight special which is a black spinnerbait.

Try black jitterbugs, frog torpedos, etc.Up here they seem to love the dark top-waters.Be prepared for some vicious strikes 8-)

Deff Black Jitterbug. Just came off a night tourney and i tore em up on a black 5inch curly tail worm.  Try your aggresive techinques and if the smallmouth are not responding try slowing down and throwing a black worm

Black just about anything. Color never seems to be that big of a factor at night.

1/2 oz BOOYAH Moontalker Spinnerbait

Black buzz bait

Color isn't as important as contrast for night fishing.  Dark colors usually work the best.

Best of luck to you.

I like black senkos with a dark blue tip. Or black with blue flake. T-rigged bouncing the bottom or wacky. Also pumpkin w/ black flake tubes or black w/ blue flake tubes. These are my 2 go to smallie baits.

Never been night smallie fishin', but been wee *** mornin fishin'.

Blass buzzbait- success with wally worlds $1 dollar special. And GYCB 4" double tail grub. Weedless, and finally recent strikes on a shakey head 1/8.

Shouldn't the pro know though? (Like that rhyme?)

Black buzz bait

I couldn't agree more. If you have access to a fly-fishing shop, take your black buzzbaits in there and ask them to tie in a few strands (assuming you don't have a fly vice of your own) of tinsel. On evenings when you get a full moon or even just clear skies, the tinsel will add a bit of flash to skirt. This brings extra attention to the silihouette that the black colour will give you.

Hope this helps.

Pro or No-Pro, no one wants to ask their Father-in-law for help! ;)

I have caught many good smallies on Wilson off points using my own bear hair jigs and a black or brown pig. Most of my smallmouth fishing is done at night on Wilson, and my number one lure is a black/brown jig. Bear hair seems to have a lot better action under water than buck tail or coon tail, and I seem to get more bites. Smallies are also very active below the dam while generating. Letting the water push your boat back and bumping the rocks with a sassy shad is deadly.
