Jig Tying Recommendations

Featured Replies

I want to start tying my own jigs, and I would like some recommendations from you with experience. I don't have the resources or the will to mold my own jig heads, so my first question is what jig heads would you recommend using? I'm really looking for 3/16 oz. with a weedguard, but haven't been able to find many in my searches so far. Also, what brand of skirt do you all recommend? Most of my jigs will be green pumpkin. I will mix up the colors a bit and add some sort of flash in, but my main concern is finding a good green pumpkin colored skirt. I've been using Booyah Pro Boo Bug jigs in the 3D green pumpkin color, and I really like it. It matches most of my trailers well, so if there are any skirts out there that can come close to that, I'd like to give them a look. If you have any more advice you'd like to give, I welcome that also.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Get in touch with Cadman for heads. He is on this site alot, send him a pm, he'll hook you up. For skirts, look at Lure Parts Online, Tackle Warehouese, Janns Netcraft and Skirts Plus. These have most of what you need. Aside from the heads and skirt material, you'll also need head paint (powder or vinyl), clear coat, a skirt tool and bands (skirt collars). Hope this helps. Pm if you have any questions.

Cadman or Gman either one can probably fix you up. If it were me, I'd have them paint the heads while they were at it.

For skirts and tools try www.fishingskirts.com

hey man just had the same feeling a couple weeks ago and me and my buddy bluebasser86 who is also on here though man we make our own shaky heads how hard can it be! so i bought the mold from doitmolds.com and plus they have videos to help show you how to and i found it pretty easy to do. we had an idea of what colors we wanted by our favorites that we already use fishing. but we went to basspro or cabelas and bought most of the skirting material that already had the band in the center. we went with some simple colors like texas craw and a PB&J and the black and blue. we went with powder pait for the heads we did brown black and a copper head color that was my favorite by far cus it was a darker tan with some green and red flake. we also bought the rattles from bass pro but you can buy all of it from doits site and they have almost anything you need but check it out look up videos on youtube.com and let me see those pretty things when your done i hope i could help you out man.

I actually did look at Do-It molds. If I am really impressed with my stuff after just tying up premade things, I may consider pouring and painting my own jigheads.

Jig Man, thanks for turning me onto fishingskirts.com. That site had exactly what I was looking for to get started. They had jigheads and all the skirts I could dream of. I just went ahead and bought some painted jigheads and skirts from them and I plan to hand tie them with nylon finished off with some copper fly tying wire. Even buying the pre-painted stuff, it will turn out to save me nearly $1 per jig off what I use now.
