Peacock Bass Tips?

Featured Replies

Im going to Singapore for vacation this summer, and i'll be fishing! They have snakeheads/ peacock bass there. Can anyone that fishes peacocks give me some tips on RETRIEVES!? Lures? Etc. Does plastic swimming grub work for peacocks? Plastic craw?

I've fished for peacocks in Brazil for several years; didn't know they existed in Singapore. They are a warm water fish.

Lures: HUGE top waters with saltwater hooks and long jigs are you're best bets (try Slevad jigs). You can do internet searches for peacock bass lures. Good luck

Singapore are on the equator in south east asia. Peacocks are stocked in the reservoirs and sometimes people release them into canals too. As far as i know, Singapore doesnt have any huge peacocks, most of them are <5 lber.

Try sending SoFlaBassAddict a PM, he's the man when it comes to peacock bass. I'm sure he can tell you what works good.

Like parrothead mentioned, large woodchoppers worked aggressively on top are always a fun way to catch Peacocks. There are two problems with them though: A. You need stout gear, and a very stout arm to throw them all day. B. You need to be in and around fish large enough to eat them. I've found over the years down here chasing Peacocks, they just don't produce that much in Southern Florida. From what you said, you're probably chasing the same size fish that live down here. If you want to get them on top, lures like super spooks, heddon torpedos, etc etc will certainly produce. You'll also want an assortment of small jerk/slashbaits. Work them hard and quick. You should get bit. Flashy inline spinners and spoons can also catch Peacocks. Again, you want to work them pretty quickly.

Hands down the single best way to just flat out catch fish is with live bait. You'll want to find out what the local forage that they eat there is. A small hook and a bobber and you're set.

The best thing you can probably do is to ask around with some of the locals. See what they recommend to you. Nothing will ever beat local knowledge. Each area will be a bit different. The fish I catch here may well act completely different than the fish that you'll catch there.

Hi,

One of my fishing buddies is currently in Singapore now on a business trip and was hitting the Peacocks every weekends. Check if the pond will allow live bait or barbless hooks only. Some waters have strict fishing rules there. He was using his bass gear, Med-Heavy to Heavy set-ups (Casting with 65lbs Braid) and he said the peacocks are in to <5 lbs range. There are big ones but not like the Amazon grade that are really big. He had two Peacocks that Broke/Straighten his stocked hooks so I suggest use beefier Hooks and Split Rings. Topwater lures (spooks, subwalks, frogs, buzzbait) was recommended by the locals.

You can also go after "Tomans" (Channa Micropeltes). Its the Giant Snakehead featured in the "Fishzilla" Episode on National Geographic I think.

Hope this helps.

keep it simple man. just use a floating rapala or an xrap. heck even rattle traps will work. if they are the size you are saying, i am willin to bet they are caught the same way they are caught here in florida. don't waste your money on "peacock" baits, when any fast moving bait will work. good luck.

Yeah the peacocks in singapore are about the size of those in south florida. I'll definitely get more top water. Will a soft plastic swimbait/jerkbait work as well?

I catch plenty of Peacocks here in SoFlo using a red/orange rattle trap. If you can find one, try the Pro Trap. It was deadly until I got hung up and lost it :(
