Opener @ Charity Island

Featured Replies

Due to the chocolate milk in Lk. St. Clair - we are thinking of hitting Charity Island in Lk. Huron for the Mich. opener. Anybody ever fish Charity in early spring?

I've never fished over there this early in the year, but if Dwight is catching them on his end of Lake Erie now, you might do okay. If you give it a try, get us a report.

Charity can hold some HUGE pigs. There are a few precautions you should take though

1. Check the weather. A run the the Charity Isles is not a quick jaunt, depending on where you take off from. If you are in a bass boat, have PFDs and kill switch attached. It is not uncommon to hit 4-5 footers as the Bay in the spring can be nasty and quick

2. Keep an eye on depth and wind all times. there are some boulders the size of dump trucks that loom just beneath the surface, especially in between the islands.

3. Check the weather. See number 1.

4. Drop shots and cranks have always produced for me around Charity. I have boated some over 6 out there as well as had the scariest run of my life during a tournament. I was fishing the backside of the isles knowing there was a storm in the area. Upon leaving I came around the isle and thought there were sailboats everywhere, wrong, 5 footers. By the time I missed the way in by 45 minutes I was sitting in water most of the ride back and it took me 2 hours to get to Bay City. The run only took about 45 minutes going out. Be Careful and good luck.

Thanks for the info. We will be departing from Caseville - about a 7 mile run to Charity. Calling for 10 - 14 winds. I'm thinking it will have to be a game time decision - we will definitely go slow in the fishing start deep and slowly work our way in. From other people I've spoke to - it sounds like a perfect place for smallies to be holding and due to the location and bottom it may have clean water which is pretty hard to find right now.

From Caseville try the backside of the big island and between the big island and the one just to the south. Again, be careful but those spots have produced well for me in the past. Let us know how the trip goes
