Too Much Rod For The Line?

Featured Replies

I have a dedicated senko/creature rod (Falcon Cara CC-5-1610S) I have gotten into fishing braid. I bought some Daiwa Samurai braid. I have a Curado 50e on the rod with 20 lb braid and 10 lb fluoro leader. Is the diamater of the line (4 lb test equiv.) too little for the rod? Thanks

Check the braid's diameter and make sure it is within the rod's specifications for normal flouro. ;)

If the line rating includes 20# test, you should be alright. The 4# rating refers to the line's diameter and not its breaking strength, which is 20#.

Just as a thought, I wonder of braid's near zero stretch and its thin diameter make this line prone to snap on shock hook sets or casts.

4# diameter at 20#? That is pretty neat considering that many other braid makers 20# braid is usually about 6# test diameter.

i use the same basic setup for finesse jigs. works for me.

I guess it could work, but 55 wouldn't dig in as much. I never go under 40, and even that is rare.

Yes, 20# test, 4# diameter. Daiwa Samurai braid is thinner, and is also an 8 strand braid instead of 4. Very smooth stuff. The reason I went with the Samurai braid is because the reel is a 50e, and the amount of line going onto the reel is an issue with bigger lines. I just worry if the thin diameter of the line is going to cut into guides, or if it's just too thin for the rod (which specs are 10-20 # line. Also if I step up to 30# test instead of 20#, would it also be wise to upgrade in leader strength, instead of 10, since it's a pretty stout rig, use something like a 12-15# test leader?.

The biggest problem with running 20# braid on a baitcast setup is the line digging into itself on the spool. When I first used braid, I put 20# power pro on a baitcaster. Which is actually a larger diameter than samurai, and I had a lot of problems with it digging in. Your cara should have alconite guides, so you shouldn't have to worry about the line cutting the guides.

As stated earlier , 55# is what you need for a bait-caster , not 30#. B)

Too small line diameters will reek havoc on a BC.
