Jig fishing...success finally

Recommended Posts

After going for close to a month of non stop jig fishing catching NOTHING, I finally caught a LM.  I only wish I picked up jigs earlier in my fishing career, even though I haven't caught much on them they are kind of fun to fish with.  The bass I caught may have been two pounds, but I really don't care it was something other than some grass on the fun end of the line.  I've caught plenty of fish before sight fishing on beds before, but that almost seems like cheating to me.  The worst part is now the monkey is calling me again to start buying more jigs with cash that I should be spending elsewhere...

Bleeding Bitsy bug in green craw with a YUM twin tail grub trailer in matching color.

Now you are hooked, try a Rage Tail Chunk as a tip. My jig production doubled this year moving from a Baby Paca Craw to a Rage Tail Chunk. I think I even hooked my fishing partner just do not know what he is going to do with 1000+ crankbaits he owns.

Yeah, I've been using some of the baby paca craws on recommendation from a lot of people here.  My one big complaint about them is that for some reason I always bring them back up missing an arm.  I need to figure out a use for some one armed or no armed craws.  I've been meaning to jump on the whole rage bandwagon.  I just need to make the time to go grab some at BPS one of these days.

Congrats.  I never fished a jig until late last year.  So far in limited fishing only a few fish.  The best thing is that jigs are relatively inexpensive compared to other baits.

i usually use them till they have no arms or they can't stay on the hook anymore, i always superglue them if they cant stay on the hook but have arms left.  ;)

I never caught a thing on a jig until this year.

One of my "new year's resolutions" was to make a concerted effort to change that.  When I started fishing in March of this year I rigged some poles with jigs and others with spinnerbaits, a chatterfrog, and some Storm swimbaits.

One of my weaknesses is that when trying something new, I am impatient.  If  I don't get instant results, my tendency is to go back to my confidence baits, even though they may not be producing either.

So I determined to tough it out, predominantly casting jigs.  Once I did that, I began to catch fish on them.  The toughest part was the painfully slow retrieval process it takes to fish them effectively.

Regardless, on my first foray back in March, I caught twelve bass on jigs, none less than two pounds, and the largest close to six.

I also missed others because I had no experience/feel in determining the difference between a strike, and a bump off a rock.

The jig became an instant favorite.  As is my tendency, when something works well, I went crazy buying football jigs, swim jigs, and finesse jigs in a variety of weights and colors.  Of course that meant I needed a variety of trailers to accomodate every situation.

My favorite trailer is the *** Beaver Craw, watermelon/red, with its claws dipped in JJ's Magic methylate.

I now have one tackle box dedicated to jigs, and about every trailer or product that can be used as a trailer from ***.

Haven't fished a jig in five or six weeks.

Right now, it's the Rage Tail stuff.  Toss a spinnerbait and chatterfrog now and then, but they are not yet producing consistently.

Congrats on the first, that is the toughest, but keep throwing it, the more you do the better you'll recognize the different feels of cover, it will get embedded into your brain, and you will know. It's kind of hard to explain.

I once was a worm chucker, 7" tequila sunrise power worm, bought them by the 100's. My buddy said you need to throw a jig I tried it and nothing, nothing and nothing, told him they stink and don't catch anything ;D

Once I caught the first one they nstarted coming.

Now I fish one 99.9% of the time 8-)
