Lookin' To Start Punchin'

Featured Replies

alright fellas there is a lake i fish regularly and it is dominated by hydrilla, i looked at a couple videos and thought that this would be a great way to reach some of those hard to reach places. so what baits, weights, line, and rod should i use. i looked at some videos and stuff but i thought i better ask my BR peers before i make any moves. i think i've got my rod for this technique picked out already, i've got a 7'2 H fast action xfactor rod paired with a pflueger summit 7:1 reel. i've got 30lb braid that i can put on it but i was thinking maybe i should go with 20lb flouro instead. ideas???

For punching Hydrilla 30 # braid is too light, I would go with nothing less than 50 # braid

Lures is simple, no curly tails, they will wrap the Hydrilla, compact is key

Rod, you want something high end heavy or extra heavy, something capable of move a 4 lb bass & 6 lbs of Hydrilla

A quality tungsten weight

Straight shank round bend hook

C'est fini! ;)

a tree trunk, chain, and a gaff.

Check this guy out. Youtube Mikeybalzzfishing and watch him. He explains what he's doing sometimes. I think he uses 65-85 pound braid on a heavy or x heavy flippin stick. He uses 1-1.5 ounce weights and plastics like the gambler cricket. When he sets the hook, the fish is buried in weeds and he has to stick his arm down there to get them out sometimes.

Here is what I use for heavy hydrilla, pads, grass

7-9 elite tech swimbait rod

Revo 7.1-1

65 lb power pro

bobber stop

1.5 oz tungsten

punch skirt

4/0 ewg superline hook

Ugly Otter/beaver/fluke/megabug

Here is what I use for a punch setup

7'6" heavy fast citrus stick CSH

pflueger patriarch 7.1:1

65lb powerpro

1oz tungsten weight

punch skirt

yum money craw

for punching I like a compact craw like the money craw. It doesn't have extra tenticles or anything and seems to slide through pretty well. The punch skirt I use is made by S.W.A.G. jigs. If you have a facebook page you can look them up there, but the website isn't up yet swag jigs. The band they use to hold the skirt on really makes it flair out nicely once it has come through the slop. I use a bobber stop above my weight to hold it in place
