Oil Bath Hubs

Featured Replies

Went looking at a new trailer for my boat today. I looked at a ez loader aluminum trailer with oil bath hubs. I dont know much about the oil bath hubs and wanted to get opinions on these from some of you that have them.

Thanks

Oil bath hubs have been around for years in the trucking industry and even on train cars but only a few years on boat trailers.

I do not have them but if I were in the market for a new trailer I would get them. I have several friends with them and have heard of only one problem. A seal leaked out some of the oil when it was new but a new seal corrected that problem. The owner said he would never go back to grease, this is after 3-4 yrs of use.

All of the high end boat builders are now using them and I would not be afraid of them at all.....Al

Here's my take. If and when I have problems with the grease type on my trailer, I will give serious consideration to changing to the oil bath system.

Get low on oil, and it will still lubricate the bearings. Get low on grease and it gets thrown into spaces and cavities where it never reaches a bearing surface. The see through caps are a big plus.

Ranger trailers have been using them for YEARS and YEARS! Only problem I can see occurring is some type of road debris coming up and knocking out the viewing window and there goes the oil, but the chances of that occurring seem minuscule. If its good enough for long road truckers.......

Had them on my rangertrail since new in 98'. Virtually no maintanace. Check the sight glass, check bearings for noise occasionally, change oil every couple of years if no problems. I you have a seal failure you'll eaither see a drip or the oil will turn milky, like a lower unit. 13 years and still going like day one.
