temps for topwater

Recommended Posts

The water temps on the lake I fish are around 57-58. I've thrown topwater and got nothing. Is it too early in the season to use topwater?

I dont know how this happened to me, but it did. I went fishing on Toledo Bend in Dec 08. we were pretty much done fishing and i grabbed my topwater rig(dont even know why i brought one) and tossed my spook. about the 3rd cast i caught about a 2lbr. May not seem strange, but it was 27 degrees outside and the water temp was cold to. thats COLD for southeast Tx.So from now on I dont care how cold it is, I will ALWAYS try a topwater for at least a few minutes.

There are no rules and there are a lot of variables, but I usually wait until postspawn to start topwater fishing.

I have seen fish caught in 48° water on topwater, that's why I say there are no rules, so it's good to  always have one on hand you never know, but normally I don't bother until PS.

I have caught bass on topwaters in the low 50s, but the bite turns on after the temp hits the low 60s.
