I don't fish in Va Beach. But I'm sure someone on these forums does.

Don't know the ponds too well but I fish Back Bay and North Landing River all the time. What are you planning on doing? If you're not in a boat I would suggest going to West Neck Marina and renting one of Dewey's jon boats. Nearby in Chesapeake is Bob's Fishing Hole. They too have jon boats for rent. As far as ponds, not a whole lot out there because most of them are private. If you're on your own boat let me know. I can get you on some fish.

Newbie to Bass fishing ready to start. I've been out a few times and I had no luck. Getting aggervated but I know it takes time. A lot different the tossing a bobber, cracking a beer and waiting for the bobber to disappear! Advice?

Where you going? What are you using? Yeah it is, but to me there's more satisfaction with working for it rather than waiting for them to do what's natural.

I've tried a few different jigs and small swim bait. I really have been out to a large area of water yet. I've been to lake out be geico which i've been told by several people is full of bass and pickerel. I can tell you I'm 0-3 LOL but I keep telling myself its because I don't know what i'm doing.

Try some beetle spins. I have some friends who have killed the pickerel in the ponds on those. As for everything else for the ponds I would say that topwater in the mornings and finesse type worms the rest of the day. That's about all I can say about the ponds around here. Back Bay and North Landing River are a completely different story. You have to think of Back Bay more like a bowl lake with a lot more flow on the south side than the north. When the grass gets thick, which should be soon (I've heard it is but have yet to see it). Rage Tail Shads and Toads are money, if the water is low. Flipping the grass when the water is high is good too. White is the key color on Back Bay.

The rivers are a different story. There is a lot of wood there and flipping/pitching is a key pattern, as well as finesse around them. Square billed crank baits are money in the fall, banging them off of laydowns and what not. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the advice! I can't wait to get back out a try. Can we fish Stumpy Lake? (without getting in trouble) The answer depends on where you look. LOL

You can fish stumpy lake, but you will be limited to the docks by the dam where Elbow Rd meets Indian River Rd. That oversized pond is full of white perch and catfish. I don't know about any bass, but it looks like there's a lot of fish holding cover there. As far as kayaks and stuff I know you used to be able to get on it, but I couldn't tell you for sure. If you don't have a boat go down to West Neck Marina in Pungo. It's on West Neck Road. Dewey has jon boats for rent and some of the best fishing around is right there in that creek. If you go right out of the marina you get a lot of wood and its more like a swamp, if you go left the wood is more sparse, but there's a lot of grass. There are fish in that creek 365 days a year.

i live in VA Beach also and found your site helpful. im looking to fish stumpy lake in the near future on my kayak. did you blog about that on a certain day? if so could you help? Thanks...

I too would like to know how stumpy lake fishing is, now that theres a pier and a kayak launch. Seen nothing but small catfish caught from the pier and some good sized carp. So many trees in the water, it looks like a great spot to fish, but not sure if theres anything big or even bass in there.
