Abu Garcia Baitcast 6000C And 5500C For Bass?

Featured Replies

i have had these for a very long time, maybe 20 years. i did some research and they are mainly used for Walley or similar. i have always used them for Bass fishing. my question is, what are the pros and cons on using these? Medium action rods. i like Baitcasters more so than the others but not too sure i am using the right equipment. never really failed me before but i always like to learn a little more of what i am using.

i just started up fishing again after a long time and i know things have changed a lot. updated. etc.

here is a pic of the 6000

The Ambassadeur reels are fine for bass fishing. They are effecient and dependable fishing tools. These reels are easily upgraded as well. If there is a draw back, it might be in weight and profile if those matter to you.

They are more than adequate for bass fishing. I started with the Ambassadeur and still have 6 of them rigged up on rods. I don't use them as often anymore, but they are fantastic reels that are rock solid. The 5500's are great, but the 5600C4 is in my opinion one of the best bang for the buck round reels while the Rocket is a phenominal reel for a tad more money.

Keep them lubed and they will last a long time. One of my Abu Amb. is over 20 years old, one is almost 20, and the other is a hair over 15 years old, and all work like their brand new. Proper maintenance will keep these reels going forever. Enjoy them and fish with them, they don't care what type of fish is on the other end! :D

should i use one over the other for lures or worms?

I base my reel choice almost primarily upon gear ratio once I know what type of fishing that I will be doing. For jigging, worming, pitching I will use a lower gear ratio (5:1) while with cranks and spinner baits I will use a higher gear ratio (7:1). If I cant decide, I always take the higher gear ratio because I would rather have too fast a reel than too slow since you can always slow down your retrieve.

ps

shallow shad raps are killer!

im pretty sure they are both 5.3.1 and 2 ball bearings.

I would prefer the 5500 because of the smaller spool. THe 6000+ models were really designed for trolling and had larger spools to accomodate that technique. I find the 5000+ reels to have more than enough spool for any technique of bass fishing I have attempted.

i will put that on the hot seat then. been using the other one. mainly because i like the look a little better but honestly havent casted it since i just cleaned and lubed it.

speaking of lubing... what do you suggest?

Everybody perfers something different. I use Abu Garcia Reel oil on my Abu's and Shimano oil on my Shimano's. I have used Reel Butter in the past and it has worked well. To be honest, I know little about oils and assume that they are all similar, but I am probably wrong in that assumption.

Grease for gears preferably something that offers corrosion prevention. SuperLube Synthetic is a popular choice

Oil for bearings and sliding clutch parts. Reel ex on the frame and Yellow Rocket Fuel in bearings

I use a thin coat of gear oil on the levelwind worm gear.

There you go, he's that guy that would know for sure :D
