They look sweet! I've had Daiwa spinning reels that had gearing issues before. Does anyone know what type of metal Daiwa gears are made of? Specifically the drive gear, I could tell the pinion was bronze.

If I were to venture a guess, assuming that you are correct that it's bronze, it may be aluminum bronze, trade name Ampco. It's one of of the cheapest alloys and it's fairly hard for a brass alloy.

Thanks, but I was actually saying that I know the pinion gear is "marine grade bronze", from the box. I was wondering if anyone knows what the main gear material is, though.

Terms like marine grade bronze, aircraft grade aluminum or surgical stainless steel are misleading as those items are not metals but alloys. Marine bronze has many alloys, for example 60 cu/40 tin, resistant to seawater, used for hardware, not suitable for gears. Aluminum bronze, of which there are number of alloys for that item too often times is 85cu/10 alum/ trace of fe.....very suitable for gears and bearings, probably ideal for a fishing reel..........cheap too.

I'm not a metallurgist, but being in the scrap metal business for 35 years I've bought tens of thousands of pounds of all that stuff.
