Anyone out there fishing the Mattaponi River?

If you think One Fish Anna is tough then you have not been on the Mattaponi River.

I am looking for information on the Mattaponi and sincerely appreciate any feedback.

Thanks in advance. :)

No one is helping us out Sam. That must mean the Mat is tough!

Can you send me his name, address, phone number, what type of boat he has, etc.... LOL.

Just kidding.

All I need is his name and phone number!!!! :D:D:D

Yes, the Mattaponi is challenging. ;)

I wish I knew more about it but in my area I live near the small section (Stonewall Jackson rd) of the river and I yet to try to fish it. I did some bank fishing a couple of times. 2 Dinks, bunch of perch, and in the winter I caught 3 pickerels from there. I know I heard rumors of big bowfin which is one reason why I've been wanting to try out in boat and just incase, others from this site says you can be in for a shock from small rivers so it's just a chance I'm going to have to try myself one day. These are older pics from there.

I use to have pics of the place years ago but I do know by me the place is covered in vegetation.

Thanks, Endless.

Nice pics.

The Mattaponi is a beautiful river.

I have fished it many times and know a lot of places to go up and down the river.

Just looking for some local data which I think is nonexistant.

Will tack another whack at the river later this month. :)

Sam,

Where on the river are you trying to fish? My wife is from West Point and grew up on the river. Her grandparents have a big house out there on the water. Around the West Point area, we catch good size blue cat's, croaker, sometime's spot. It all depends on how much rain there has been. Down near the big bridges you can catch resident rock fish. Croaker fishing is good there also. I've even heard of people catching some cobia up near there, but I've never seen it. As you go further up river the water is more fresh. I've had luck catching bass in some of the small creeks, had to take my little jon pretty far back into the creek. I know this one creek that looks small, but actually is much bigger once you get up in there. Water is like 6-8 feet deep durring high tide, enough to take a bass boat. Only problem you have is a low hanging bridge. about 3 feet off the water, you have to duck to get under. My not so secret spot anymore. Further up near rainbow acers, you start to see lilly pads. I've has some sucess and caught some nice bass off the pads. There are also a lot of fallen trees along the shore line in that area. I've never really fish any further up such as Walkerton so I wouldnt be able to give any input about that.

Vegas, thanks a million for the input.

We are putting in at Walkerton and I usually go up river.

I will have a better idea of what to do after today when I see a friend who fishes the Mattaponi often.

Will look on map for the creek with the bridge.

Thanks again. :)

Do you have a place on the matt? If not, the Pamunkey is a way better fishery, which is closer to richmond as you probably already know. If you look at the DGIF fish shock data, the matt is real low for bass, I think it was lowest of all the fisheries they had listed the last time I checked. Its known for having Cats, but also known for not having bass. Not just hard to fish, but there just isnt as many.... Theres a reason people drive past the Matt. to fish the Pamunkey. They hold bass tournaments at the Pumk ever other weekend.....

I fish the Pamunkey a fair amount GF's family lives on the reservation there.

Just my 2cents

Thansk, Spivey.

My club is having a tournament on the Mattaponi so that is why I am fishing it.

And I have read the literature on the river from DG&IF and could have told that organization that the Matt is a tough place to fish for largemouth bass.

Two or three nice keepers will make me a happy guy!!!! :)
