Flying With Rods/reels?

Featured Replies

I'm about to fly on Southwest(2 free checked bags!) and want to bring 2 rod and reels and tackle with me. My rods are 2 pcs, but unfortunately they don't fit in my largest suitcase by a few inches.

I'm flying out sunday and was wondering if people had suggestions on how to transport these rods and reels. I i know i could probably just buy some pvc pipe/end caps or packaging tubes, but i'd prefer not to waste 1 of my free checked bags on just the two rods. Are you allowed to carry on 2 pc rods? I'm going to check out Dicks and Sports Authority after work, but any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

yes, my relative is a commercial pilot and he said you are allowed to carry on 2 pc rods. Butif they don't fit I would say that you need to get a rod tube that is very durable because they beat up your luggage at the airport, I would say to make a tube out of PVC but that might not go over towell with the airline, I hope this helped!

I'd like to just carry them on . My larger pole is a 6ft6in 2 piece, so i'll probably need like a 40 inch tube. Do you think tsa/airlines would let me just carry them on in a poster tube container? I'd really prefer not to waste a check in bag on 2 poles, since I'm packing for 2 seperate trips(fishing and vegas).

I have carried on a 2 peice that was a 7fter...

Just make sure to rest so your arms don't get tired!

Unless the rules changed, you should be able to take it as a walk in and they might not even count it as a walk on. That is what I did on an international trip and my 2-piece rod was 8'6". A bass rod would be even more convenient. Just be sure to stow it AFTER everyone else does to ensure it is on top of everything.

Just keep them bound. There won't be a need for a pvc tube.
