Unhooking Bass Problem

Featured Replies

So today i went out and caught a two pounder, one problem, i have never unhooked a fish before. Now i could have looked it up but why not ask fellow forum memebers, the problem with me is that unless i know exactly how to do it ill be honest a little scared because it is new to me and i have no idea how fish react. So if you guys could please explain to me in detail how to do it i would much appreciate it because i felt pretty dumb that i couldnt do it.

Just confirmed with my buddy that the fish swallowed the hook which makes me feel better but if someone could still tell me how i would appreciate it.

Are you asking how to remove gut hook fish or just removing in general? If general I use forceps. If never held a bass neither here...

I'll handle bass like in first video, thumb in mouth and use my forceps to get the hook out. If hook is in the way of me grabbing the bass than I would use the forceps first, grab hook, then place my thumb in the bass mouth and remove hook. The forceps are nice. I stole and ideal from seeing one of J Francho pictures I crimp the forceps on my shirt so it is always near by. If weary of fish action I use to use this. Bought it at BPS

For general unhooking you have to push the barb in then pull the hook the opposite way it went in.

the through the gills method for gut-hooked bass is great. it really works though sometimes it can be tricky. it should be a sticky on this site, so many people in these threads say they just cut the line without knowing there is a safe way to remove the hook. you should definately try it. there are also step by step pictures of the through the gills method on infishermans website and theyve also been posted on this forum in a past thread...

It also helps to crush down the barb on all your hooks. Makes extraction a lot easier and you won't loose that many fish during the fight. Barbless hooks work exceptionally well overall. Sure, you might loose a fish here & there, but I'll bet you I land over 90% that I hook. And all are released unharmed for the most part. Without the barb, a lot less damage is done to the fish, regardless of where it's hooked.
