Ugly Otter Flipping Hook

Featured Replies

Just wondering what you guys are using for your flipping hooks on smaller "beaver" lures and 4 inch craws. Everything I try either the lure slips down every flip ( we are flipping heavy grass) or I bend the hook open when I set the hook. I have seen the keepers people are making with shrink tubing, anyone have any tips or instructions for doing this?

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the reply, I have tried the EWG hooks, they are the ones along with the Yoevella's that I keep bending open. Maybe it is because I use the 2/0 size anything bigger seems hard to rig. I feel like the hook is to big for the lure

I use the hook keepers made out of shrink tube. Get some of the 1/8" size. I also use the big mother flippin hook in a 3/0 size. Cut the tube about 3/4" straight. Then cut it again at a 45 deg. angle in the middle. slide this on the hook with the pointed end sticking towards the hookeye and away from the hook point. Keep the tip of the pointed end just behind the bottom of the line tie. heat it up and there ya go. Do this in advance so while you are fishing, you don't have to mess with it. Hope that helps.

Try an owner 3/0. I'd recommend the heat shrink solution the above guy mentioned, but you'll need a bigger boat if you find a fish that bends that owner ewg hook!

Sorry about the boat comment - it's shark week.

Don't use sissy hooks.  All the hooks mentioned above open up after a few fish, requiring a retie.  Use Gammy 6/0 Octopus or Owner SSW in 5/0.  Snelled.  You can add a bait keeper with shrink wrap, though the snell does a nice job of holding the bait by itself.

See my buddy's Burnie's site for the article and videos detailing the rig: http://www.burniehaney.com/blank.html

Owner Straight Shank XXX strong 4/0 and then I take a hitch hiker and thread it on the the shank to keep it from slipping down.

.

Owner is about all I ever use.

I use Gama 4/0 or 5/0 superline EWG hooks for flipping.  I have never bent one.
