Bad Day

Featured Replies

Today I broke my steering helm on my 99 skeeter 186sx and to top it off my trolling motor started to smoke at the top head unit then smoke started to pour out of the plug. I took the plug apart and both wires are chared and after taking the head cover off there's 3 wires melted togeather :( . My question is where do I go from here ? Any reason this happened and do they sell tn wiring harness and are they pricey ? Thanks

Where do you go from here? To the dealership!!! Sounds like a new bass boat to me :D

My advice would be to take/send the trolling motor to an authorized Motorguide/Minn Kota repairman and have an expert repair it(he can call with an estimate after inspection). The plug on the boat will probably need to be replaced, so inspect/replace/repair as necessary. I would also check the circuit breakers. If you do not have the skills to perform this then take it to someone that does. Don't mean to sound harsh but this is about your only option as I see it.................Al

PS I can't address your steering helm, need more info.

the steering helm could be easy or hard. I would replace the cable/s while doing the helm as they are probably worn as well. the hard part is usually getting the cable out of the motor as most of the time you need to remove the motor to do this. other than that pretty straight forward with basic tools. as for the trolling motor I can't help. I only work on gas motors. sounds like something got hot and melted then shorted out you cables.
