Bass Tournament Weigh-In

Featured Replies

Hi,

We use the traditional end of day weigh-in for our monthly bass fishing tournaments. A concern of our club is with fish mortality,

having to keep fish in livewells for an entire day. We're interested in knowing if anyone has weigh-in procedures that call for multiple

or mid day weigh-ins so that fish caught in the mornings can be released. We're a small bass club in Hawaii with about 20 members and

we tried doing a lunch weigh-in but found that we had to weigh individual fish in the morning and then again in the afternoon

and the weigh-in process was cumbersome and took almost an hour. Our club has a three bag limit per angler. We're a friendly club with no

big money tournaments but it is competitive among anglers for bragging rights. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Give out slips for hourly lunker bonuses, and you can turn in slips instead of fish at the end of the day. We call them "Dash for Cash" tournaments up here. The downside is you have to run back to weigh in an hourly lunker.

Do you use a weight master that is not fishing the tournament ? How do your lunker bonuses work, does an angler get so many points etc. towards their total weight?

Thanks smile.gif

Yes, there is a weigh master and witness. The biggest fish weighed in each hour wins the bonus.

You can also do what college BASS is doing - weighing in fish in tanks instead of a basket. Takes more work though.

Your best bet is to take a look at the Sure Life site on the left, and educate the whole club on fish handling.

Thanks for the information - we might consider using some kind of bonus system and see how this works. We feel that most of our anglers are good about handling fish that puts the least amount of stress on the fish as possible. We even encourage the use of barbless hooks.
