Humminbird, Garmin, Lowrance, and Eagle have great 2D sonar units in that price range with GPS and color displays. You should visit a Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, ect,. Push some buttons to see which one appeals to you. Then ask about a specific one or two for an opinion.

i would try to find a used SI unit, but that because ive been wanting one for a awhile. if you looked long enough im sure you could find you on a forum or ebay. I saving now to buy one this spring that way. Every sonar ive bought has been used and i havent had any problems with them just make sure the person you buy from is well know on the forum or has good feedback of ebay.

400 dollars buys you a lowrance with down imaging.. anything with down imaging is going to be great for you and you can get one for 400... i think its 5 something if you want tthe same one in a colored version

@ robdob, what unit are you talking about? im looking for one myself. if i can get one w/the DI that cheap id go with that

brian, you can get a Humminbird 570 DI that has Down Imaging and dual frequency 2D sonar for less than $300 if that technology is what you want.

The almost equivalent Lowrance unit is the Mark 5X DSI at the same price but it only has Down Scan.

The color versions in both brands are about $250 more.

thanks for the info wayne, you see all the bells/whistles some of these depthfinders have but some are way too steep
