Im thinking of trying to use filler line. Just seeing if anyone on here does it or tried it and didn't like it. And what a good cheap line to use? Do you need to use the same size filler line as your leader? Any tips would be great!!! Thanks

I've tried it. Its not really worth it in my opinion. Just to much fuss for the results.

If you mean filling your spool half way with whatever el cheapo, clearance line, by all means do it. You will save a lot of money, particularly if you use some the pricier flouro lines.

I put about 60 yards of "good" line on top of some cheap backing. I found a bulk spool of #10 line a few years ago, and have all of my spools started with this stuff. I like to change line frequently, so I save quite a bit every year.

So you just put #10 line on all your reels? I was wondering say I put some#17 flouro it ok to have #10 mono line as a filler? Thats what I want to do is go buy a big spool of #10 or something mono and match it up with did # of flouro line on my other rods to try save a little money.

you could go buy shakespeare 20lb catfish line, fill the spool half way up, then tape it off and start your "good" line to fill the rest.

I didn't think of taping it up I was just going to tie it together. I just went out a bought #12 suffix 3000 yrds for $35.

I do the exact same thing. It never mattered to me what the backing line was because in bass fishing my good line has never been out enough to get down to the backing.

I buy 700yds of zebco omniflex 12lb mono. You can get it dirt cheap at walmart.

Always put backing on my fly reels but never thought of doing it with bass reels. Do most of you fill 1/2 way before adding "good" line?

I fill my baitcasters before spooling. Definitely saves money. Im using a cheap spool of 8lb right now, when i run out ill buy 12 or 15lb. Filler line size doesn't really matter, I don't plan on every getting to the filler. If its the same price i'll buy a slightly heavier line.

How much depends on the spool capacity and what im doing with the reel. I fill most spools with about 50-60 yards of flouro on top of the filler and leave about 1/8" of spool unfilled.

I used to tie the two lines together with a double fisherman but found out that even the small knot can make a hump in my spool once i add the good line. taping works best and i use one little strip if scotch tape. was using electrical tape but it does add a significant amount of mass to the spool.

Im going to start using fluro next year and will probably start doing this next year. Just wondering if anybody has found a way to take up the space the filler line does but perhaps with not as much weight? For heavy lures, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference but for soft plastics it might. Who knows, just something that popped into my head.

I leave it on forever. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I've never had enough line out while bass fishing to get down to the backing.
