Zoom/WEC makes another coffin bill Z-flat run

Featured Replies

I've bought several WEC's from Simmon's, and they emailed me with some limited runs. One was the coffin bill z-flat, and the other was a 'thin' hicky. I have a few z-flats, but that new Ayu shad z-flat looks really good, and I'll probably buy one. He also has a few E1's and E2's, which are extremely hard to get ahold of. This will probably sting a few of the guys who purchased the z-flat for $50 or so.  That's what they were going for on ebay.  Let's hope they run the same....

Warning: you could go broke looking at this page(s). Three pages of WEC's...

Natural, please do me a favor, explain to me what makes them different to other cranks, my everyday cranks are mostly Rapalas so what 's special about this ones that makes you like them so much ?

Raul,

I'm not Natural, but I do have a good share of custom cranks (including the aforementioned coffin-billed Z's).

I like to think I'm very analytical about crankbaits - - I don't buy a custom crank and wish it to be better than other production cranks.....it either offers me something that production cranks don't offer, or it doesn't.

It's all about the action, and these (and many other Zooms) perform in a way that warrants the price.

I have dozens of flatsided cranks in a similar style to this bait, and none of them have the exact same action.  The Z-Flat Coffin is completely unique......it has a very tight, lively roll that almost makes it look like a willowleaf spinnerbait blade coming through the water.

It's one of the best flatsided cranks I've used in clear water, and especially pre-spawn clear water.

I'm definitely a crank enthusiast, so I have a predisposition to appreciate custom baits and the art of those who make them.  I like to support the work (in the end - these "expensive" baits are definitely not making anybody rich......it's a real person making these things, not an injection mold pumping out bodies by the thousands).

Short end of the story - - these, and a lot of the other custom cranks perform in a way that warrants the price.   Some are WAY better than any production cranks out there.....some are definitely not.

Best just to pick up a few and see what the fuss is all about.   :(

I think Stringjam did a nice job of answering your question, but I'll add to it. Rapala makes a nice selection of baits, and they work very well. I throw the $4 DD22 just as much or more than the $22 WEC Tapp. I guess the question you are asking is, if there are 4 'like' baits, and one is made by WEC...why would I go with the WEC? Simply put....they seem to have the most lively and unique actions. WEC's B2 clone...the E2...is the best B2 clone made IMHO, and the only thing better is a pre-1980 bagley. I will never tell anyone they need to buy $22 cranks to be successful, it's just a passion of mine.  I'm always looking for something better....
