How do I best use my digital scale

Featured Replies

Ok so I bought a digital scale to have. What I cannot figure out is the best way to weigh the fish with it. The scale has a largish hook on the end of it but it is blunt what is the best place to put it?

Try using a "weigh bag". Place the fish in their, weigh it, subtract the weight of the bag, and viola', a safe way to weigh. Would this work for ya?

that is defintly something to think about.  I don;t really weigh them often  only when I catch something I feel is good.  Caught a 19 1/2 ich LMB last night ( pretty good for the lake I go to) and was tryin to figure how to weigh it with out hurting it.  Do them bags take up much room?

I generally just put the hook on the outside of their jaw where it splits. Works nice, doesn't hurt them.

bring the hook through the bottom of there gill right where the too gills meat

That is how i way em too. Just be careful with the gill plates.

This is pretty safe?  I am not too familiar with a fishes anatomy and don"t wanna take a chance on hurtin them.

i used to do that but i've had fish thrash around and fall off and damage their gills.

so i sharpened the hook and just poked it through their bottom lip just behind the bone.

then i got a digital lip grip so i don't have to deal with the hook anymore.

The bags shouldn't take up that buch room. Just fold 'em up and stick 'em some where outta the way. Just make sure ya got 'em on hand for that hog!!!!

simple instructions.

1. catch a 7 pound bass.

2. put it on the scales.

3. read the actual weight (about 4 pounds)

I always weigh them hooked at the top of the gills nearest the mouth.  Never had one fall off or hurt itself.  I don't weigh anything less than 4-5 pounds anymore though.  After a while with the scale your guesses become much more accurate.  the 3 pounder is no longer 5, and the 5 pounder is no longer 8+ lol.

it's amazing how many people put up pics of a 2-3 pound fish saying 'it's my pb, i'm guessing it's about 6.5-7 lbs' lol.

haha ok got ya didn't really realize that.  :(

yea getting a scale for most people will be a very humbling experience.

lol I guess it could be.  I know my PB is just a 5lb 6oz fish, it was at A lil club tournament long time back.  Now I am back fishing again it is fun to be able to weigh the ones that look big to me   :(

i haven't got any over 5 lbs yet in my lake.  i know they're in there though!  considering the state record is 10 or 11lbs and change my chances of double digits are pretty slim...  not like the southern boys that pick through the 6-7 pounders all day.

yea I hear ya there I am about 30 mile south of chicago and that is about as far south as I have ever gotten to fish.  In may I am goin to Bama though to fish Gunnersville  I can't wait!

I've had to spread the hanging hook open wider, as it was somewhat problematic to slide it into the gill/jaw gap with one hand.

I've had them thrash while hanging - and they can come off, so I keep my free hand right by their tail to grab them if they start thrashing.
