Wish me luck. I'm going to try to find some cover placed by the game and fish commission with electronics. The main goal is to learn the new depth finder, but I will definitely be doing some fishing too. The weather is supposed to be clear skies with westerly wind around 7-10. Water temp should be around 50-55 degrees and will definitely be clear. Anyone have any suggestions on what to throw first? I had a heck of a time deciding on what to tie on. I had in mind trying drop shots if we find fish on points. Thanks in advance, Paul.

You can't go wrong with a jig

Yeah, I'm a little worried about keeping the boat still enough to work a jig in the open water with the wind forecast. I'll give it a shot for sure.

so why not ask for depth finder help too instead of just what to throw?

also, i would throw spinnerbaits

Tie the jig on for the weight and use the drop shot.

See if maybe the dep can give you a nap of where they dropped the structure/cover, some will. This way you know what your picking up and what it looks like. Next, I would fish 4 baits:

1. Silver buddy

2. Hopkins spoon

3. Drop shot

4. Jig

a gps and marker buoys also help alot.

Deep water fishing is reL fun when you find that right piece of cover.

Finding cover is easy, just grab your most expensive or treasured crankbait and cast it, I bet you won´t cast it more than 10 times before it hangs up for good.

If you have a few rods tie on a spinnerbait, a jerkbait and a jig and then downsize to a dropshot if you need to. Also try fishing reaction baits first, who knows maybe the fish will be active. Good luck!

I Like the crank bait any kind it would solve the wind problem if it come up or a berkley power worm

I have been doing this recently, the wind is my enemy being in a small boat. Here is what I do. I locate the structure or whatever then toss a marker on it. Then I back off to whatever distance I think I need to be to work the structure thoroughly, then drop anchor. Fish the spot, pull anchor, retrieve marker, do it again on the next spot. Works great for me and I don't have to try to fight the wind.

I made my own marker too. I used three pieces of foam that is about 3/8" thick cut into an hour glass shape. Glued them together and wrapped it with some fishing line with weights on the end. It spins nicely and does the job.
