Crankbait Rod For Lipless, Squarebill And Shallow Diving Crankbaits

Featured Replies

I am looking to get a rod specifically for lipless, squarebill and shallow diving crankbaits. I fish from the bank 99% of the time. I am looking at a few brands like BPS Crankin stick, W&M Skeet, W&M RC, The KVD line and the ST Croix line. The lipless baits are normally 1/2oz, the lipped baits Bandit100's and SK 1.0 1.5 and 2.5.

My question is would you reccommend a ML, Med, or MH rod for this. I am pretty sure the length will be 7' but I can talked into going longer or shorter if it would be better.

Thank you in advance

7' MH for sure dude. Welcome to BR!

Welcome, and I agree with Packard. Most of my Medium rods have an upper limit of 1/2 oz. You are much better off throwing lures that are in a rods mid-range, IMHO.

MAy I suggest a Powell Max 704 CB. 7' Medium action. PERFECT for everything you need. The best part is: its all graphite, so it is great for topwaters and jerkbaits. It has a great parabolic bend. What a wonderful rod.

I never considered the powell Max because so one carries them where i live. I was able to play with the BPS and KVD rods on a vacation to Orlando when I took a side trip to Bass Pro so i would just order them online if need be. The others I can get locally at Dicks or Gander Mountain.

For jerkbaits i been using my Med action Veritas.

Thanks again to all that responded. I got back fishing more consistantly last year after only getting out a couple times a year for the last 10 years or so. I updated 2 baitcasters last year ( on a MED and a MH Veritas) and those two along with a spinning rig got me through. Just feel like a crankin rod is the way to go next.

I look forward to posting more.

For my crankbaits diving less than 10' I use the St. Croix Mojo Bass "crankster" its a 7'4" Med Moderate.. I fish from the shore and the boat since alot of the lakes close don't allow for the boat...

As a bank fisher you may need a bit longer rod simply so you can cast farther.

Longer rods can definately help with longer casts. I can never cast far enough from the bank. However, I fish around a lot of brush, trees and tall grass. Shorter rods are easier to work with in these tight spaces. I usually have both long & short rods with me so that I can adjust to the environment.
