Anyone Familiar With A 97 Vw Jetta? Need Help

Featured Replies

Hi all

I recently bought my daughter her first car and it happens to be a 1997 VW Jetta.

I was wondering if someone can give me some advice on how to remove the oil pan. I have drained the oil, removed the oil filter and removed all the bolts that are holding the oil pan in place. I cannot break it loose. I have used a rubber mallet to try and break it loose....but nothing.

Is there something else I am missing?

Please help

Is a cross member under it or is it open some cars require engine removal to get the pan off. If it's open and just stuck don't be afraid to get a flat head an pry it in there won't hurt that cast block any. Why do you want it off anyways

no, there is not a crossmember at all. It is completely open. That is why I cannot figure out why its not coming off after i hit it with a rubber mallet.

When we bought the car, we were told that it needed an oil pump. So we bought the oil pump and according to the car service manual, it should be just on the other side of the oil pan. i tried sticking a big screw driver in between the block/the pan to pry it off but no dice. I didn't try that too much cause I didn't wanna ruin anything. So I stopped

If your 100% sure u got every bolt pry that SOB off might need 2 drivers or prybar one on each side and pop it off. It's held on by RTV silicone it's a real B some times make sure when u put it back on to clean up te block an pan with a cookie wheel and brake clean dry it off and squirt some blue RTV on there and put it back on.

RTV?? I'm assuming that is a "glue" of some type?

  • Super User

No prob and RTV is a silicone gasket in a bottle pretty much

gotcha...Is it required if I have already purchased a gasket for it?

  • Super User

No if u bought a cork or rubber gasket kit u won't need it just be sure to get the old gasket off all surfaces befor putting the new one on and buttoning it up.
