Kentucky Lake Newbie - Any Info?

Featured Replies

I am planing a trip to Kentucky lake come March; however I have never been here before. I will be fishing the southern Tennessee half near Paris, TN. So here is my problem, I have never fished any lake this big and I have no idea where to start. What things should I look for this time of year? Are the bass going to be spawning? What is the main forge bass are going to be feeding on? Any info I can get will be helpful as I am only going to have 4-5 days to fish. Thanks

Early or late march? shad will be primary forage of course there is crayfish and blue gills

I take a trip there almost every year at the end of March. We stay in Benton Ky. If the water is at normal to low levels, crankbaits and spinnerbaits are probably your best bet fishing on main lake and secondary points. If the water is high fish in the backs of the creeks. Jigs, flukes, and senkos in the buck brush and flooded timber.

Around the 15th I think. What type of cover should I be looking for on the main lake? Brush? Deep water rock points?

10-15ft dropoffs near shallow water/flats. The steeper the better.Look for rocks and gravel on shore and areas where rock changes to dirt.

There is a lot of underwater log jams next to some of those steeper drops. slonezp is on point with his info

Prepare for any type of weather you can possibly imagine. Last year fish a tournament on March 25th. Sleet, snow and hail on practice day before tourney. Day of tournament frost on boat the heavy warm rains by noon. I have also fished in March in shorts and a t-shirt. Water temp should be mid 50's so if the sun is shining they will move into sunny bays otherwise drop-offs as others have said 10-15 feet. Fish slow. Southern half of lake might reach 60 degrees
