How Would You Fish This?

Featured Replies

ok have a lake near my house half frozen over in front of me is 6 to 10 ft of water heavy weed bottom to my left is a creek with 4 to 6 ft of water sandy bottom air temp is 40s water temp probally about 35-40 there is a few downed trees which hold good bass in summer any ideas on what to use ?

I am betting that the water temp is lower than you guess, I would wait until ice out, then if you have a good warming trend the fish will move up to feed, is the creek dumping in colder water or warmer water? I am guessing that this time of year the water coming in from the creek is frigid and they stay away from it. As the water warms it will atract bait fish and the bigger fish will follow. right now I would think that the fish are holding in a deeper area of the lake waiting for things to warm up, the deeper the water the warmer it is closer to the bottom, at 20' the water temp will be closer to 39 degrees as opposed to 33-34 closer to the surface of the ice. this is why most fish hold in the deeper part of the lake during ice cover, and move shallower as the ice comes off.

First thing I would do is go grab me a fish locater ( otherwise known as a stick of dynamite depending on your neck of the woods ) throw it over there where the ice is and watch your fish locater locate the fish for ya.

Or you could just try a hair jig either way works pretty good for really cold water.

i agree with river rat for the most part wait for the ice to melt. i live in ks and fish alot of local ponds in the winter time and i like a smaller jerbait, shaky head, or a mid size jig. and if u know what side is the deeper side i would stick to that side cus thats where they stack up cus the warm bottoms atleast thats what i have had the most luck on.

Wait til the ice melts, you won't find many bass shallow in freezing water.
