Help To Match Reels With Rods

Guy's

We've talked a lot latley about rod action, power, length, brand etc. for all the different techniques, which makes this site so valuable.

I'd like to ask about matching up reel speeds....

In my case I got my first 7;1 reel [bps carbon black] I'm confused as to what to use on which rod I have, so if you would be so kind to help me match up.

What I have now...

*Mudhole blank custom 7' 6" MH/F pitching rod w/ Quantum Accurist PT 6:1 / 20.5 ipt - 20# floro

*Allstar ASR 7' 3" jig rod w/ BPS extreme 6:41 / 28 ipt - 50# braid

*Falcon heavy 7' FC-6-17 "Carolina Lizard Dragger" [has rather moderate action thinking about for top water]

w/ Johnny Morris Sig 6:31 / 28 ipt - 15 # Mono

Shimano Compre 7' MH/F [i'd like to use it for spinners]

BPS Carbon Black 7:1 / 31 ipt [new reel, no line]

I have no problem changing lines and combo's if you guy's think the first 3 should be changed.

Thanks for any advise

Mike

You shouldn't match the reel ratio to rod as much as you should match the reel ratio to usage. Ofcourse you can always slow down/speed up your retrieve, but I personally like different reel ratios for different applications. I have a 7.3 ratio reel, but find it much to fast and will probably sell it soon. Personally, i like a 5.something for cranks and spinnerbaits and a 6.something for everything else.

IPT is actually the deciding factor for me, as some reels with the same ratio can have very different IPT measurements. But the above is assuming a linear relationship.

I don't see any "mismatching" of your current set up.I would experiment and decide for your self.

Have you thought of getting a 7' M XF for soft baits like small worms, senkos, and especially flukes? I have one and it handles these baits very nicely. Just a suggestion.

Thanks

I have 7' Fenwick m/m spinning that I use now for cranks, a 6'6 m/f baitcaster for wacky rigs, shakey heads, flukes etc.

Just wondering if I needed to change things around.

Thanks

If it were me I would reverse these two set ups, meaning use the spinning for the wacky and shakeys and the baitcaster for the cranks. I can't stand using a spinning reel for any cranks unless they are very small cranks.

Good point.

I just felt that with the different ratio reels I have they may be better suited on a different rod for the different techniques.

Thanks for the reply's

Mike

I agree with Kansas about switching the wacky and crank setups.

Mike

I'd put the Carbon Black on the jig rod, the Extreme on the pitching rod, the Accurist on the C-rig set up, and the JM on the spinner bait rod. The two fastest reels will help take up line quickly for jig and plastic fishing. The C-rig is probably fairly heavy and crawled across the bottom doesn't need a high speed. The JM is a middle of the road to make burning or slow rolling the spinnerbaits comfortable.
