Line Snaps On Cast

Featured Replies

Fishing on the river with a Mojobass 7' MH cranking rod and 15# Stren Flourocast tied to an old Shimano Curado. I'm using a Carolina rig with a floating jig. Yesterday's current made me use a 5/8 weight and I had 2 snaps on the cast. I can recall a few snaps last year using 20# trilene mono but this is new line I had soaked with L&L over the weekend. Is my line too light or should I get a hybrid?

Lines normally don´t snap on a cast, when they do then it means that the line is either damaged by somehting like abrassion ( on the levelwind surface or by the guides ) or nicked ( after a backlash ), normal wear or, less oftenly, manufacturer defect,or poor storage conditions. So before thinking about getting this or that line first check that the contact surfaces ( levelwind insert and guide inserts ) are silky smooth.

Stren Fluorocast says it all. It's not a particularly shock absorbing line. It develops hard, brittle spots and has a bad habit of popping for no apparent reason.

I didn't have any backlashes, thank God. I will check the guides but if they are smooth, what then? A bad batch of line?

@Hooligan not to mention the memory their line holds. I'm reluctant to spend more on flouro bc I assume all flouro holds memory.

All line has memory! Try KVD Line & Lure Cond. and that will take care of that! I would say it is your line that you are fishing. Try a good line like Sufix or Seaguar.

He said it soaked in l&l overnight eyeda.,.tmier,what type of weight were you using? you said it snapped on the cast and was wondering if you were using a tungsten "insert/free" weight?

Like hooligan and eyeda said, there are some very good flouro choices out there, and there are some bad..do a search on this site for flouro lines and you will see some great advice.

and i'm watchi'n ike fish the BM series now using stren fluoro braid..wonder what that lines all about.?

I was using an egg sinker and a crane swivel. I didn't let the sinker slip back off the swivel and always watch the weight while casting a Carolina rig. Both times the line snapped just before the rig started to fall. So I lost ALOT of line on 2 snapped casts.
