Spooling Braid Question...

Featured Replies

I just bought some Power Pro braid. I have never used braid before. So how do I tie it to my reel? The guy at Gander Mt told me to wrap a piece of duct tape around the spool. Then tie the knot around the taped spool, and then wrap another piece of duct tape over the spool again. He said this prevents the braid from slipping in the spool over time. Is that what I should do or should I do something else?

Any help would be appreciated,

Jay

I just use mono as backing, but make sure it covers the whole bottom of the spool.

How much mono do you use? Just enough to cover the arbor of the spool or do you fill the spool ¼ or ½ way with the mono and then top off with the braid?

Its personal preference. Some guys use just enough to cover the spool, while others will fill more than 1/2 the spool with backing line. I used to fill most of the way with backing to try to stretch how many reels I could fill with a spool of braid, but I found that after a few breakoffs, I was casting down to my backing and getting more backlashes due to the line catching on the knot, so next time I respool my reels I use braid on I will be removing some of the backing and spooling on more braid per reel.

That makes sense. I will go no further then 1/4 of the way with mono and the rest will be braid.

As said backing is a personal choice, myself I seldom use backing, I like braid all the way.

This is a good step by step video on how to spool up braid.

nice video thanks

I arbor it twice.

I use spinning gear and fill with mono backing such that there's room left for 50-60 yards of braid.

I usually spool on just enough mono to cover the spool with a single layer, then fill the rest with braid.
