Finally got a calm sunday for some fishing on Lake Ontario and attached ponds! We've been getting pounded with wind a 4-5 ft waves all week but the weather finally cleared. Water is still COLD in the lake, maybe low 40s, and the ponds are still down in the 50s. With my new Costa Del Mar 580G shades (AWSOME!), i was able to find some nice offshore structure out in 10-15 FOW and decided to drag a 1/2 oz football jig around and see if any smallies were starting to move up. I ended up just catching one, but it was the biggest smallie i've ever caught! Absolutely thumped the jig and i proceeded to swing for the fences! After a good long fight with a nice jump, I landed her. I couldnt believe how fat she was, absolutely crammed with eggs. Unfortunantly, i didnt have a ruler or scale, but it was 2 hand spans (9" each) plus another 2-3" and heavy! Any estimate on weight???
After spending an hour or so offshore, i decided to go for the green guys in the connected ponds. I ended up with 2 more in the hour before sunset flipping a 1/2 oz blue/black jig. First one, pictured below, came off of a broken reed line and was about 19-20". Other guy came off the end of a fallen tree.
All in all, it was a good night of fishing and i can't wait to get on 'em again soon!!!
