Is this price for a new reel? These can be found online for $179-$229. Quantum has some nice design features but also some QC issues. There are a lot of choices in your price range. It's almost hard to go wrong. For a beginner, you may also want to look at a BPS PQ or Shimano Citica.

There is nothing wrong with Quantums QC. I've been fishing them for 20 yrs and never had anything wrong with them. I currently have 20 quantums and they are great.

I have the exact reel your looking at. After using a lews tournament pro and bass pro pro qualifier, i would recommend both reels over the quantum. Its a good reel, but i think their are better reels for the price(or less). Also the 7.3 gear ratio is extremely high atleast for me, which is the main reason mine is up for sale.

My advice would be to get a Lews tournament pro($200), a Lews tournament speed spool (150) or a bass pro pro qualifier(100). In that order. My next reel will be one of the 3, just not sure how much i want to spend yet.
