Your suggestion on trying different lines is commendable, however, your assumption that I haven't experimented with alternatives to XL is wrong. I've been fortunate enough to find myself in the position to fish 200 days a year or so for the past decade and have found that XL is the best choice for my type of fishing I know it may not meet everyone's needs. I like the stretch of mono and, with the drag set correctly, I've never had a fish break me off BUT I do want to be able to break it off at the hook when I get snagged because I've seen too many water birds, otters, and other wildlife fouled in braid and heavier lines. Fishing is a catharsis for me and I like to keep it simple.
I guess the point of my post is simply this: If the original poster is happy with XL, then continue to use it. Just because something is not cutting edge technology doesn't make it inferior to newer products.
