If the rod is medium action I would say thats your problem Iwould go with a mh . If it is a medium heavy I dont know what your problem is.

I think he has the speed ans talent to win the 8 golds but I think that swiming that many races is gonning to have a bad effect on him Im calling 7 golds and one bronze.
