  1. Making my 3rd trip to Kentucky Lake starting 7-22. I am a Florida guy - not used to ledge fishing. Not asking for specific spots - but any advice on what kind of ledges/dropoffs to look for? Are the fish there tired of crankbaits - if not what are good kinds and colors? Rattling or quiet? Or would worming/jigging be better? Thanks!
  2. Just got my old trolling motor back - pleasantly surprised - repair bill was only about $65. Next question - do any of you have a 2nd trolling motor you keep as a spare? I recently fished a club tournament while my troller was in the shop - I felt like I was caught in a gun fight armed only with a knife .
  3. My current trolling motor - a Motor Guide 56 lb 12-/24 volt bow mount hand control - recently gave out during the first few hours of a 3 day weekend. > I should not complain too much - I have had 11 years of trouble free service out of it. My mech says it can be fixed - but once again I fished last week without it (waiting on a part). Anyway, I am considering a new one - either the 71 lb 5 speed or the 82 lb digital variable speed (both are 12 V hand control). Do any of you keep a 2nd trolling motor as a spare? I am now too spoiled to fish without a troller. Also, will any of the trolling motor mfgrs or dealers sell just the motor without the mount? Also, is the digital model worth the extra $250 or so over the 5 speed - especially going on an older boat?
  4. Looking for a new topwater rod - two questions 1) What is the best length - approx 6' or 6' 6"? 2) Would an extra Fast tip be too stiff? The reason I am asking is that one model I am interested in is a St. Croix Avid AVC62MXF - that length rod only comes with the extra fast tip. Thanks!
  5. Thanks for the flea market tip. If I don't find what I want there I might just settle for an online or catalog site that has free shipping.
  6. Anyone know of a website or catalog outlet that sell them at a discount? Thanks
  7. Thanks to all 8-) One more question - are there any good online sites that sell St. Croix Avid rods at a discount?
  8. Thanks guys - I was thinking something along that line - The St. Croix Avid AVC 66MF. Also saw a 6'2" Avid AVC62MXF in a Gander Mtn store that I liked the feel of, but I wonder if that XF tip would be bad about ripping treble hooks out of a fish's mouth. Also have been thinking about a Falcon Cara T7 6'6" rod. I currently have an Avid crankbait rod and two Falcon Cara T7 worm rods and like all of them. Are there any online sites that sell St. Croix Avid's or Falcons at a discount? Also, would the extra fast tip on the AVC62MXF be too stiff for topwaters? Thanks!
  9. Recently broke a tip on a 6! Quantum. Looking to replace it with a slightly longer rod. Will mainly be throwing walk-the-dog type lures, Pop-R's, prop baits, and occasionally some hard jerkbaits like X-raps. As for power - should I go Medium (vs Med-Hvy) - and for action - should I go Moderate or Fast? Who makes good rods for this purpose?
  10. Just bought a reconditioned Dual Pro SE 2 bank charger for my bass boat. Have not decided exactly where to mount it or even if I mount it at all. I hate to add more weight to my boat with today's gas prices. I guess I could mount it and go on a diet and call it even . . . ;D My boat is an 18 foot Winner with a Merc 150. My bilge area is already somewhat crowded but there is room on the inside of the transom. What do you all think of just attaching alligator clips to the leads and making the unit portable vs a permanent installation?
  11. OK, I think I have narrowed my choices down to the Falcon Cara T7 Reaction Model CCB-5-173DR-T7 or th St. Croix AvidAVC 70 MHM or the Lamiglas Skeet Reese SR705. The Falcon is 7'3" and the other two are 7'. All three rods are medium heavy - moderate. I already have a Falcon Cara 6'10" worm rod which I really like, although I am being open minded toward other rod choices for this crankbait rod. Thinking about putting a Revo STX on it. Thought about the new Revo Wench, but I think the STX may be the better choice as I will probably be throwing lipless cranks over grass more often than big lipped cranks over open water. I noticed Tim Horton was using a 6.3 to 1 Pflueger for his big cranks on Kentucky Lake - so hopefully the STX (with that same gear ratio) should work fine throwing big cranks as well. Am I on a sound track on all this?
  12. Going to Kentucky Lake in about a month. I have heard a lot about fishing ledges and dropoffs there with crankbaits. I am thinking about either the $100 Falcon Low Rider or St Croix Premier rods or I might splurge for the $160 Falcon Cara T7 Reaction or the St Croix Avid. I mostly fish in Florida, however, and have had only occasional luck on crankbaits, and don't know how much I would use this rod on a regular basis, so I am kind of leaning to the cheaper Falcon (Low Rider) or cheaper St Croix (Premier). I could, however, use this rod throwing lipless cranks over hydrilla or eelgrass fishing my usual Florida places. What would be the forum's choice given my stuation above? Would it be worth the extra $60 upgrading to the Falcon Cara or St. Croix Avid? Also, what length - 6' 6" or 7'? And . . . what would be a good reel to match it with?
  13. First of all, new poster here. Would like to add another baitcaster - possibly for cranks or other hard baits. Considering etither a Curado or a Tour Edition. Any preference among forum members for either of these two reels?
