Good baitcasting rod for topwaters

Featured Replies

Recently broke a tip on a 6! Quantum. Looking to replace it with a slightly longer rod. Will mainly be throwing walk-the-dog type lures, Pop-R's, prop baits, and occasionally some hard jerkbaits like X-raps.

As for power - should I go Medium (vs Med-Hvy) - and for action - should I go Moderate or Fast?

Who makes good rods for this purpose?

My dedicated rod is a St. Croix Avid AC66MF (now AVC66MF).

The rod is firm enough to work topwater and jerkbaits, but the

tip is soft.

Ditto

The Browning Medallion GT 6'6" M/F is a good alternative if you're wanting to spend under $100.

It works outstanding for floating stickbaits, Skitter-Pops, and Spooks.

I use an All Star Titanium 6'6" Light, extra fast action rod.  Zell Rowland special.  They make the same rod today in the TAS or Platinum series rods.

Don't let the light action fool you.  The rods are perfect for throwing a multitude of topwaters and they make a great jerkbait rod too.

I also have the AC66MF  I have it paired up with a REVO premiere .  You can throw topwaters and jerkbaits all day with this light combo :(

Thanks guys - I was thinking something along that line - The St. Croix Avid AVC 66MF.  Also saw a 6'2" Avid AVC62MXF in a Gander Mtn store that I liked the feel of, but I wonder if that XF tip would be bad about ripping treble hooks out of a fish's mouth.

Also have been thinking about a Falcon Cara T7 6'6" rod.

I currently have an Avid crankbait rod and two Falcon Cara T7 worm rods and like all of them.

Are there any online sites that sell St. Croix Avid's or Falcons at a discount?

Also, would the extra fast tip on the AVC62MXF be too stiff for topwaters?

Thanks!

I also have the St. Croix Avid AC66MF and use it for top water, jerk baits, and light spinner baits. It's a great rod!!!

St Croix Avid AVC66MF as well.  Awesome rod!

Later, :(

I use an Avid AVC66MM crankbait rod.

One more question - are there any good online sites that sell St. Croix Avid rods at a discount?
