newbie question about jig bites
thanks for the advice! i went out today because we had an early release day from school and went to a pond with some friends...i caught 4 fish about 1-2 lb each...my friends were catching little 12" bass left and right with little spinnerbaits, i caught far less in numbers but better in quality...just because i dont want to create a new thread i have another question .... do little fish stay away from jigs for a reason or is it just the difference in fishing styles between a jig and a spinnerbait?

newbie question about jig bites
i just recently started fishing jigs after my uncle introduced me to denny brauer, apparently after my uncle knowing how much i loved bass fishing for the last 5 years my uncle decided "oh yeah i forgot im good friends with one of the best bass fisherman in the world" but we had a conversation about alot of stuff but we did talk a little fishing and he asked me how confident i was in jig fishing and i said i owned a few that people had given me here and there and he got me into them but this spring is the first time i have had any kind of confidence in them at all but i have a problem detecting the difference between a piece of grass or a rock and a subtle bite from a bass...so sometimes i set the hook and end up looking like a fool to anyone else that is watching and sometimes i just let it go and get the feeling in my stomach the good ol " i think i just missed her " feeling...so any tips on detecting the difference between just cover and subtle bites would be appreciated because im learning more and more after catching my new personal record on a subtle bite that they dont always just slam it so thanks in advance

what to do in this situation?!?!
i went up to our "secret" spot this weekend and fished hard for a day and a half. after fishing for about a half hour i got what turned out to be the biggest one of the trip....5.41 lbs. i caught about 10 fish over the course of both days...but heres my question i fished only one bait the whole weekend a translucent white and powder blue 5/8 oz jig and plastic trailer...which was working good around the beds where i caught the 5 lber laying on her bed but it wasnt great but i was catching some fish about 15-20 feet out from shore in roughly 6 ft of water....in this particular pond there is a thick bed of coontail that grows starting about 10 feet from shore and i was getting some decent action swimming my jig across the top and letting it drop into the bed and swimming and dropping but it got to be where 9/10 casts by the time i let my bait drop into the plants even a little bit all i did was end up reeling in a 2 foot long piece of coontail and my bait wasnt even presentable to where the fish were....is there anything i can do about making a jig even more weedless to where i can just drag it through that stuff without it hanging up and pulling it in because i tried just swimming it over the top of the plants but i didnt get one strike doing that i only got bit when i let it fall...so any tips on what i can do to keep my bait presentable through this stuff for a little while so i have a chance would be greatly appreciated

Fishing aggravation
hey man first off thanks for serving our country thats a brave thing to do as far as that goes id write letters, emails, phone calls, petitions pretty much just antagonize them until they do something about it, see if you can get any of your fellow veterans or even active duty soldiers to start a petition i would think that would mean something to them but until then sorry about your luck i hope you still get to wet a line stay strong thanks again!

Morning fishing and bait selection
to me it all depends on the conditions if i get out on the water around sunup then i usually like to hit them with a jitterbug or other topwater bait for a while then ill go to a crankbait when its a little lighter out then ill switch to a fluke or a spinnerbait because i know this isnt always true but it seems like i run into alot more schools of shad around 10 am then i do any other time during the day then i go to a plastic bait and then i fish whatever im having success on lol.....by the way thats just my dog days of summer bait pattern it all depends on the conditions

where do i find these?
this is kinda intense but it'll work find a cheap battery out of a car at a junk yard or somewhere and hook jumpers up to it find some metal rods and stick them in teh ground a good distance apart, oh yeah this is after the rain hook the jumpers up and the worms will come up instantly

Help Finding the Bucketmouths
my favorite way of finding big bass is to find where the little bass are, if there are alot of little bass holding tight to cover and the conditions permit fish to be cruising or suspedning then id try to fish more open water structure like maybe a submerged stump or a drop off, and then visa versa because i may be wrong but from what i've learned big bass and dink bass dont act the same

Correct Way to Hold Fish
it depends what kind of fish you are holding i guess, i hold bass by the mouth because i have heard if you pressure under there tongue it paralizes them so they cant flop while im taking the hook out, but that could be myth but i still do it, plus i would think holding them by the gills you run the risk of messing up there gills, and we wouldnt want that

bass seats
do they make bass seats that you can mount me and my friend are trying to convert a jon boat into a semi-bass boat, we have a 25 hp motor and a trolling motor but we were wondering if they had bass seats with stands to mount onto the seats of the jon boat

Advice for VERY Stained Water?
i was fishing ratltraps i was actually using a chrome bleeding shad but im sure if i had a darker colored one it may have worked just as well but the point is the water was pretty stained from the 4+ inches of rain we just got over the last couple days and i did pretty good

Fishing in timber
i fish at bluesprings lake and if youa re in kansas city (i assumed from your name) you should know where taht is and thers alot of "petrified" trees ala truman and i like fishing jig and pig and t rigged worms along the trees, its tough to get a boat back there sometimes id suggest a smaller aluminum boat to a 20k fiberglass boat but thats just me and not wanting to take chances with my dads boat but i hope this'll help

Hot sun, where do the bass go?
alot of studies show that bass are irritated by direct sunlight, but i just happen to know this because i did a science project on it for my biology class that he is right, the ripples on top of the water no matter how mintue they seem are enough to break up the rays enough to have some bass cruising, but overall i fish a pond like this up at my farm and me and my friends have figured out a pretty solid pattern which seems obvious and probably is but it took us awhile to figure it out, the corners, if it has any corners in the pond that are like mini coves sortof, i have caught alot of fish on lipless cranks and plastic worms and jigs casted from one bank of the corner acrossed to the other and worked back, i dunno why it works but i do it during the heat of the day in july and i get results, so maybe it'll work for you

Clear Shallow Water Technique
i actualy fish alot of lakes like your talking about, and the thing i've learned about that is the small fish like to hide in the weeds along the bank, try if you have a boat casting parallel to the bank a little further out say maybe 15 feet out and try to catch the bigger fish suspending in the water and also you may lose a lure or 2 but i like to throw frenzy lipless cankbaits(ratttle traps) into and through the brush or anything else thats in somewhat deeper water...especially this time of year.

i cant find the fish
i have recently started fishing a new pond in my area, i call it a pond its actually probably considered a small lake i dunno its about 50-60 acres it is a conservation lake but is known to produce, i have noticed alot of bobber and worm fisherman catching brim and to be honest have only seen 4-5 other actual bass fisherman, but the thing about it is no boats allowed on it, but in my opinion its not necessary because most of the structure is fishable from the shore(i have checked with the cons. agents they purposely set it up this way) but i just havnt been able to get the bites consistently, the water is in the 75+ range and deep into the post spawn, but i cant seem to find the fish, it is a rocky bottom with alot of cattails and primrose patches and alot of sunken trees ranging from twiggy sapplings to a couple of full grown oaks that have fallen into the water all withing 30 feet of the shore the water is open in the middle with virtually no structure(again according the the cons. agent) i have been throwing senkos and t rigged worms in and around the trees, pitching senkos in front of the edges of weedbeds and cattails and throwing rat-l-traps through the trees and i get bites but not consistently on anyone bait if anyone has any thoughts of a tactic let me know please

extremely muddy lake
alot of times if its just a pond that noone fishes in or takes care of its usually a good sign that theres an abundance of catfish, because the catfish being bottom feeders for the most part stir up the clay/mud/gravel whatever bottomand that makes the water murky but thats just a possibility
