Walking The Dog... Better With Baitcaster Or Spinning Reel?
Spinning.............do they make anything else, lol? I think the rod being used can make walking the dog easier, like a 6'6 rod, not that I don't use up to 8 footers. Walking the dog, or many types of presentations with spinning gear is a matter of getting your cadence down, sometimes it takes a few casts for me. IPT or gear ratio is something with spinning gear that I pay little attention to as I'm always working a lure, whether I'm jerking and pausing, working a top bait or jigging and reeling up slack. Spoons, cranks and spinnerbaits just get reeled in at my desired speed which I vary as well, I find no extra effort is needed.

Shimano Baitrunner
Just reading the statistics on Shimano's web site the 6000d baitrunner holds 130 yds of 65# braid, IMO even that is obscene. I'd be using close to 300 yds of 20# or about 250 of 30# with a little bit of backing. The Shimano BR is a proven winner, as long as that's what you bought no need in suggesting something else, you have a nice reel. Casting is dependent on the rod the reel is mounted on. I'm not a B/R user myself so I can't give a suggestion on the rod as it may be used dual purpose, bait and lures. That said of the people I know that use them, the rods are nothing out of the ordinary, mh 10/20 and heavy 25 lb. My fishing partner uses another brand of baitrunner on a 40 lb rod (Penn Slammer rod), catches sheepshead, to snook to kingfish and sailfish, he mainly uses bait.

How Much Backing
I never use backing, putting tape on the spool will eliminate any slippage. True, initially loading up with braid is a bit more expensive, bass sized reels don't hold that much line. When I need to add line I'm using the braid that's already there as my "backing" and I'll add 75 yds or so, the alberto knot works well. Some people will just reverse the braid and that works good too. I prefer about a 1/4" from the lip. My higher capacity reels also get straight braid, but I do not join lines if I'm running low, I don't take a chance with a joining knot, it's a fresh respool. I don't throw the good braid away that's left on the reel, if it's 20 or 30# I'll probably use it on an inshore reel, I'm not really wasting too much.

Spillways
Spillway snook caught on the saltwater side are not freshwater snook. They are snook coming in to feed on some of the freshwater fish being pushed out of the spillway. Freshies are landlocked snook that swim thru the spillway and get trapped and do migrate distances inland. I do hear that they do not reproduce in freshwater even they they can tolerate it, I don't know for sure. The fish don't care about the rain, they're already wet........lol.

Pure Fishing Reel Repair
I've had nothing but excellent service from Pure Fishing. I've sent them quite a few of my Abu spinning reels. Anywhere from a general cleaning to dunked reel off the beach with sand in it. All but once have they not replaced my reels with a new, that reel was serviced and sent back no charge, each and every time they have paid the shipping back too. I use Sorons which are not the bottom of the line and the reels were off warranty. I for one would never complain about them, I'm very pleased. I will say if I'm interested in a quick turn around time or I'm dealing with another brand I use a local repair shop. Only negative may be available parts, small companies just don't stock everything.

Best Rod Quality Vs. Customer Service/warranty
That's an attractive situation. There is a definite difference between warranty and an upgrade program. Luckily I've yet to have a rod break under normal fishing usage although I've had a few break by my own abuse. I would agree that a new rod that performs well without any kind of breakage during the first few weeks is a rod that should last, defects show up quickly and the retail outlet will almost always make it right. Buying a rod on line is something I've never been too fond of, I've done it with both positive and negative results, the negatives are a hassle. I'm more than content with the performance and durability of the brands I mainly use, rating a warranty is something I can't do as I haven't had to deal with it. One of my neighbors recently broke 2 of his St Croix 2 piece rods that were previously used for stripers when he lived in Conn., they broke while bass fishing. He was very pleased with their replacement program.

Peacock Bass Help
Those canals are very low banked in that area, not high like we have in Palm Beach County. Last time I was there i did see tarpon rolling as well, couldn't get a strike and a 6'6 6'12 spinning rod wouldn't have cut the mustard anyway.

Is It Possible To Take A Fresh Water Bait Caster And Turn It Into A Salt Water Bait Caster?????
Nothing wrong with a stradic I own a couple of them myself. But if it's a $$ issue there are other reels more modestly priced that perform as well as the stradic, I own some of those too. They have performed flawless and have passed the test on durabilty for me catching a range of different species and sizes.

Peacock Bass Help
Head west on Griffin Rd (that's where BPS is) to I-75, fish that canal or any ones in the general area.

Question For Those That Lost A Parent
My opinion is this, forget about the illness most of us has had or will have those memories. All it really does is create depression, nothing positive comes out of those thoughts and nothing can be done to change what's already happened. I would be focusing on the good memories, be healthier for your own well being. Death is part of life, accept it and move on and make your life as good as you can, your dad would want that.

Is It Possible To Take A Fresh Water Bait Caster And Turn It Into A Salt Water Bait Caster?????
I don't know what goes on in your area of Florida and what type of species you plan on targeting. In my part of Florida you would be hard pressed to see anyone using a low profile b/c in SW. I may have seen no more than dozen in the last 10 years. I do see some round reels once in awhile but mostly by bait users. If it's a money issue why not go with a spinning outfit? Understandably there are many b/c responses as they are the most popular type of reel on this site. I would suggest doing an internet search and see what other SW Florida anglers are using for the type of fish you plan on catching. But if you are talking about an occasional venture into the salt just use what you have and don't worry about it.

Is It Possible To Take A Fresh Water Bait Caster And Turn It Into A Salt Water Bait Caster?????
Sure it can be done, I see it nearly every single day, some of these reel are very old, one of my friends uses a Mitchell from the 60's. How good a shape they are in I can't answer, so many of these fishermen are using rods with broken tips and could care less, they may give them a rinse but that's about it. I was using a Pflueger supreme mg 35 in saltwater for snook for almost 2 years, the finish is still like new except for a few scratches and the performance is just fine, I use this as a bass reel now. A gentle hose down and a drop of oil every few months on the handle bearings is the entire service that reel has seen. My reels only get serviced if they need it, I do not get them serviced just to do it.

Best Rod Quality Vs. Customer Service/warranty
I've yet to use customer service for a damaged, mine have never broken. I did buy a defective Falcon that BPS returned my $$. I've had nothing but good experience with Pure Fishing and Quantum for reels. Quantum's reel warranty is 48 hours for fresh and 24 hours for saltwater reels turnaround time.

Dude! Where's My Canal?!?
The canals have been very low here over the last week, the ponds are filled to the brim. Being as it's June, it's humid and the gnats are out my freshwater fishing is quite limited. Snook season is over until 9/1, but now is when it should get good. Everyone has their own take on why saltwater fishing has been slow this year, the bottom line is a lack of white baits showing up,plenty of mullet. I love fishing from the beach, haven't had much of a reason to do it yet, just a matter of time until it gets hot, been saying since April........lol. All said it's really a matter of putting your time in and something is going to happen, my numbers are way down this year but I caught some nice snook, tarpon and barracuda. Until the fishing picks up I'm spending some time working the ICW and the inlet, as soon as some decent reports come in I'll be heading up to Juno and Hobe Sound.

The Breaking Point. (My Journey)
Diets don't work, lifestyle changes do. Just about every weight reducing plan is based around balanced meals and exersize with slow steady weight loss. It's one thing to be in the gym 5 times a week taking all kinds of supplements if you're planning on putting your body into competition, for all around general fitness I would not put anything in my body that may induce a side effect or not be compatible with a prescribed medication. No question that obesity can lead to a host of other problems, but your own genetic make up can play an important role. I haven't gained a pound in 40 years after losing some weight when I was about 25, ate right, stayed active and the weight peeled off, it was pretty easy beacuse I was young. However I was predisposed for diabetes which surfaced about 3 years, my weight dropped from 140# to 115#, I was a sick puppy. After being on medication, which is a constant balancing act for me, my weight is back up to 135#, I improved my already good diet to and I'd cut off an arm for a bag of potato chips and a bottle of coke, lol. My cholesterol dropped from 247 to 118 and holding steady, resting pulse is 70 and bp is 110/68, that varies of course. Being almost 68 I know something is out there to get me, it's not if but when.

Would This Rod Hold Up To Those Lures?
Can't address the sellus as I don't own one, but every single rod I use for my inshore fishing I exceed the max lure weight, with zero exceptions. Most of my rods are several years old and I use them everyday, to date no problems. Now that I've said today will be the day I break one............lol.

Canal Behind My House, Part 3
If they were in my backyard canal I'd be fishing for them too. Personally when it comes to freshwater fishing I like catching bass over snakeheads and peacocks over bass. Haven't seen any here yet, I'm sure it's just a matter of time until we do, but I hope not, if I want them I'll drive to Broward. I did find an area that was loaded with them and caught some nice ones, I just do not enjoy fishing in that muck, but I'm sure I'll venture down there again.

I Guess I Should Be Happy...
I get nose bleeds on those high piers, fished them maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 10 years, but I love the jettie at Boynton, sadly they made it 2' higher, added a railing, the dangling cable was so much better for fishing. We have been seeing quite a few bigger tarpon in the area as of late, we have a lack of step reefs here, so the fishing is not quite as good as other areas, but I manage...........:-), like anyplace nothing beats local knowledge and I've been fishing this place 4-5 times a week for 10 years. @RyneB, you may want to put a permit on your bucket list too, pound for pound as good as it gets.

Abu Garcia Vs. Shimano Spinning Reel
Not only do I own stradics but I own 4 Abu sorons (soron is the updated version of the cardinal 800 series), 20 2 40's and a 60, now a discontinued model. I'll give the merits as well as the shortcomings with the soron reels, the pros are very smooth on retrieve, an excellent drag and built really well, and the finish looks like new used in sw. My soron 60 is very impressive, 30# drag on 15 oz frame holding about 250 yds of 30 # braid, I use this reel strictly for casting for kingfish. Alan Hawk reviews most sw reels and likes the sorons, in fairness he does rate the stradic as his #1 pick in the price range. The negatives I've experienced are this, line twist with braid which I do not experience with the stradic. Under windy conditions I've had braided line get caught under the spool and get wrapped around the shaft, knowing this I'm now very careful when casting so it doesn't really happen too often. I thought 2 or my sorons developed a "geary" feeling, Pure Fishing replaced them and everything is aok. I would have liked to see the 20 size with a bit more line capacity. Personally I'm as comfortable and confident whether I pick up one of my stradics or sorons. I'm using these reels in saltwater, IMO if they stand up here they'll do well anywhere.

I Guess I Should Be Happy...
I didn't expect to land the tarpon, way too much fish for the gear being used. I did the right thing by cutting my losses of only losing a lure and saving all my line, a smaller one I'd played for sure. The majority of tarpon we catch there are juvies 10-40 lb, a 40 lb is a lot to handle on snook spinning tackle. Cuda usually are caught on the incoming tide, they like clear calm water, the opposite of what snook like. Even though the tide had started going out the water was still very clear, we casted towards the beach side.
-
I Guess I Should Be Happy...
I hit the inlet at 5:am and the mullet was everywhere on the incoming tide. After about 30 minutes of fruitless casting, I get nailed by something pretty big, the first jump tells all, it was a tarpon. I'm using a brand new Cabo 40 reel with 30# of drag locked down all the way and line is being stripped off with lightening speed. As a knew there was no chance of stopping it and even if I could have netting and lifting it would only have been a dream, I grabbed the spool and break off my #12 xrap. As I'm reeling in the slack a young man hooks a jack that was enormous, bravo to him as he gets the jack along side the jettie after quite a battle, I lower my pier net and we can't lift it............wow, so it's 0 for 2 but both of us had a great time. Now the sun is up and lots of small blue runners a round, this brought the barracuda, now it's 1 for 3 as I land a 40" on a barracuda tube.

Fishing Neighborhood Ponds?
A vacant lot is owned by someone, IMO in the true letter of the law you are trespassing. Seldom have I had a problem fishing if I've had access to the lot from a public street, but I pick and choose those places carefully.
-
Reel Size
I only use spinning gear in freshwater and the heaviest I use is when snakehead fishing throwing frogs. I don't use anything special but what I already own, that being mh inshore 10/20 rods with either a soron 40 or spheros 4000. I find the weight and comfort level of these combos to work quite well for me.
