  1. DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT LIVE WELL YOUR FISH AT POWHATAN LAKES. If the warden comes by every one of you will pay a fine as this is a CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY location. Please remember this as the lakes are still only in their third year of recovery from a major disaster. Also, I would suggest everyone try and team up, as the banks aren't that accessible. endless... It is two parts with two separate boat ramps.
  2. Yep, flies for me. Everything else feels like cheating! The one in the pic was on a white streamer, IIRC. Trout in the little mountain streams are not usually picky about what they'll eat. The difficult part is sneaking up so they don't detect you. Been wanting to get into fly fishing, but haven't had the opportunity to learn yet. Interested in the idea and challenge of hiking to a fishing spot, though. In-line spinners on super light weight tackle would work right? Just as a simple tackle option?
  3. What kind of baits are you guys using? Has to be artificial, right?
  4. A good size bluegill is more fun to fight than a bass any day. Scrappy little dudes and good to eat to boot!
  5. Size and numbers will be better at the Ponds due to the fact that the Lakes were only recently refilled and restocked for a couple of years. The most important thing to remember (and I know most of you do it), but CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY at Powhatan Lakes. The Ponds are also a great spot for kids.
  6. The bank fishing at Powhatan Lakes isn't really all that ideal. Its hard to walk around other than the dams and fishing piers. If you head a little bit further up Rt. 60 there is the Powhatan Ponds. There are three of them with more bank fishing. They are obviously not as big, but two have primitive boat ramps. Also, bring your tick spray and where long pants at either places. First time I went to the ponds I was pulling ticks off for a week.
  7. Truer words were never spoken. 25 mph speed limit means 24. Get three tickets on a military base and lose your right to drive on one.
  8. I'm still learning the tides, but everything I have heard is to fish the outgoing tides and that you fish the tide over the time of day. Where on the James are you?
  9. Can't think of much else other than Twin Lakes or the App. River that you'd rent to in that area. Guess I need to give them a call.
  10. Went there once. My best advice is rent a boat or kayak. Difficult access from the bank. Don't go to the lower lake as its being reclaimed by the forest due to erosion.
  11. Wayne, after the article in Virginia Wildlife my dad took a day off of work to go bank fish there. He caught some nice panfish but don't think he caught any bass. He has since been fired up to go over there. He found a jon boat rental in Farmville...Fred's Boat Rental? Have you heard of this place? Can you rent there and take anywhere you want? Don't want to fool with the bass boat just to use the trolling motor unless its my last resort.
  12. I've been fishing a pond where a co-worker lives and I've caught a couple of fish that would be "citation" in my state. Normally I don't care much about these things, but I figure if I keep catching them then maybe I should get my certificate. Does anyone have a good way to keep a fish alive from pond to check station and back to the pond? If I have to kill the fish I'll just keep throwing them back and be happy to know that I caught it.
  13. There are a bunch of nice boats outside of my hotel and I wish I was fishing tomorrow instead of working. > Anyone know where they put in at? Is it a big enough event that anything is happening there during the day?
  14. Yeah there is a pond there. Guess I could poke around it until whoever owns it runs me off. I'll talk to Mr. T. whenever I see him this week and demand a pond or I'm taking my business elsewhere.
  15. Oh, he rents it through out the year? Guess I should have realized there is probably a lot of that going on. One of the guys working on site is renting a house from a farmer and there is a pond right there. Too bad the Quality Inn doesn't have a pond.
  16. I think I may know the person who is currently renting that farmer's pond.
  17. This pond is right around the corner from my office and I've NEVER seen anyone fishing there in the 10 years I've worked there. Nice to know now that its accessible to whoever. Sam...you ever find out about that pond off 58?
  18. To get to Deep Run from BPS (and putting you through Innsbrook in case you want to do some hopping...) 95 south to 295 towards Charlottesville. Second Nuckols Rd. Exit. Right onto Cox. Go through Innsbrook and pass Broad. Take a left onto Three Chopt. Right onto Gaskins. Right onto Ridgefield Parkway. Entrance to park will be on your right. I haven't fished that park since I was in elementary school and used to go over there with hot dogs and bologna for bait. But like hoki said, its a nice spot. Another close one would be Echo Lake. But, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, I believe it was recently drained and has not at all recovered.
  19. I used to fish Innsbrook with nightcrawlers as a kid and I remember catching plenty of sunfish there. There's also several parks like Deep Run. And if you want to make a drive to the country, my dad does well for sunfish at Powhatan Ponds.
  20. Which is why I'm really skeptical...
  21. Keep hearing commercials on the radio for this website. Has anyone used it? Is it worth it?
  22. Not sure I want to try and bank fish the big lakes. Got a lead on one private pond with the safety guy for the site contractor. Let me know if your friend says yes. That would be awesome. It would be just me and of course I'd catch and release and not leave any trash.
  23. Going to be working on the new building in Boydton for the next 6 months or so and staying in South Hill. Other than Buggs Island, are there any spots anyone can suggest? Might try to bring my boat down at some point, but that involves driving my personal truck and finding a spot to leave the boat so it won't be a constant. Edit: Apparently a new building in Boydton is going up that is confidential, even though the governor had a press release about it. So...just pretend I didn't mention where I'm working.
  24. If you are worried about it being closed, use Dutch Gap...its open all night with lights.
  25. I think we ought to stick to fishing and quit talking about the Hokies right about now... :-/
