Just Recieved My First Baitcaster...do I Lube Or Grease It Or Clean It?
Delaware Valley Tackle replied to bucketmouthbeatdown's topic in Fishing Rods, Reels, Line, and KnotsThe fear of incompatibility between lubes is overblown. It's the soaps (thickeners) in greases that occasionally don't play nice together and even then the results aren't likely to be catastrophic especially in a low load application like a reel. Adding a drop of oil on top of another brand between cleanings won't hurt anything. In fact, it's preferable over letting something run dry that shouldn't.

Need Help Picking New Reel
The PQ is a great value, the Revo is built on the same platform but more refined. The Tatula is a fine reel but Daiwa is typically a little higher priced when comparing apples to apples. Keep looking for deals on reel that retail for $100> and you almost can't go wrong.

Based on the fish in your Avatar....YES. lol

Understanding Braking Systems
Just the opposite in my experience. Mag brake reels tend to be more finicky over all. Some guys love them though. I'm not trying to scare you away from one or the other, just sharing.

Rod/reel Combo For Little Girl
The attention span for little ones is so short I wouldn't buy anything specific for them. A toy with a hookless practice plug if anything. They'll be splashing, chasing butterflies etc. Let them cast an ultra-light if they want to and then help reel in a fish. Keep it light and fun at this age and by the time she's 6 or so she'll want "one like Dad's". Savor every second. My baby's 19 and seems like yesterday she was running around this way. One more thing: don't expect to be able to seriously fish with the kids along. If you get frustrated it will kill their enthusiasm quickly.

Understanding Braking Systems
Externally adjustable Cent brakes are a relatively new feature. Most dials will be for Mag brakes like RW said. A new reel should come instructions on how to use the features. Cent brake tabs can be snapped into locked position to deactivate them. I'd start with 3 on and 3 off alternating every other one to keep things balanced. If a reel has Mag brakes always turn them off before setting the spool tension then back on.

Co-Angler Advice...advice For The Back Of The Boat
If he'll leave the console unit on for you watch for targets you pass over. I've caught a few good ones right off the back end even though we just floated over top of them.

Understanding Braking Systems
The spool tension knob is an adjustment that affects casting but is not referred to as a brake. For the most part casting reel brake systems fall into one of two categories: Magnetic or Centrifugal. Dual systems obviously use both. Personally, I prefer Cent brakes. They are set it and forget it and their effect changes with the spool speed which I find provides better backlash control. There is no system that takes the place of an "Educated thumb" (the ability to feather the spool and control backlash). You'll have to experiment to see what you own preference is. The PQ is a value especially on sale and very similar to the Lews internally.

Just Recieved My First Baitcaster...do I Lube Or Grease It Or Clean It?
Delaware Valley Tackle replied to bucketmouthbeatdown's topic in Fishing Rods, Reels, Line, and KnotsIgnore those videos. They're non-sense. Fish the reel as is. Have it serviced during the off season or when it tells you too.

Fish Finder Wiring
Delaware Valley Tackle replied to Delaware Valley Tackle's topic in Bass Boats, Canoes, Kayaks and moreFunny you should mention Auto Zone. That's the first place that popped up when I did a search for that part. I' like to do things right if I'm going to do them at all. Rather spend a few bucks than waste $1.

I Cant Be Alone......reels With Many Bearings
Since the bearings in a spinning reel are for support and smoothness as opposed to casting, they can benefit from more bearings if they are put in the right places a little more so than a casting reel. That said, the ratio/IPT is no doubt to blame for the cranking resistance you feel.

Appreciate any tips/suggestions for wiring and mounting a depth finder in a bass raider. (No existing wiring or connectors). Gauge of wire? Thanks

Crank Rod Necessary?
The biggest advantage to "Cranking" rod is the slower action which helps keep fish hooked up with treble hook lures and gives the fish time to eat it good without yanking it away. Try what you have and see for yourself. If you lose a bunch look for a more suitable rod.

Customizing Reels
Bearings are measured by IDxODxW. You wont find bearing sizes or specs on any schematic. Boca has a model search that's pretty good. I'm a Boca dealer and will sell to members here at 10% off list.

Rod & Reel Combo Suggestions
If the primary use will be for jigging where sensitivity is important, skew the budget toward the best rod you can and grab a reel with whatever is left. If the reaction bite techniques will dominate the budget can sway more toward a real workhorse reel.

Us Reel Super Caster 1000
Don't buy bearings from the OEM, you'll pay way too much. If you know the sizes I can hook you up.

Cranking Rods
I loved the SR705 Lamiglas and have customs on that blank. The current EXL 705 ($120) is also a glass rod but I'm not sure how/if it compares to the classic SR.

Help. Spinning Reel Spooling Unvevenly.
Yes, the spacers on the spool shaft are the adjustment for that. Other causes can be splice knots that cause a bump or a twist that got missed and covered over. If you're down to one spacer and still having a problem you need a thinner one. The one you took off is likely thinner than the first one. You may want to try swapping them. If your still having problems send it in if you want and I'll take a look.

Need A New Reel (Shimano Or Lew's?)
If you have PQ's and like them but want to experiment, skip Lew's/ABU/Pflueger for now since they're all built on the same platform as the PQ. More Daiwas, Shimano, the new Pinnacle line, maybe a Quantum but I suggest staying in the upper end with them if you go that route.

Inexpensive Polarized Shade Help.
I've done some research in the past and like a lot of things, the majority of sunglasses come from the same manufacturing plant. It looks to me that the point of diminishing returns is around $80 and anything over $125 or so you're paying for the name. Look for labels stating 100% Uv A&B blocking, shatter resistant, polarized and low distortion. You can get all this for <$100 easily. The test for polarization is to take two pair, hold the lenses perpendicular to one another and you shouldn't be able to see through them. I don't fish or do much of anything else without eye protection. I have 3 pair right now: dark, amber and clear for really low light and night time.

St Croix Medium Light Rods
St Croix blanks tend to fish a little heavier than similarly labeled competitors. I find myself using The ML more and more as my go-to spinning rod for bass.
