  1. remember the manual learning the "educated thumb" and I agree those "big" brakes than ran the "raceway" inner spool. "a black bass reel that must be fished to be appreciated" .... very true.
  2. funny after all these yrs. I have yet owned a reel that can "beat" the distance I can cast with the old Lew's Speed Spool .... coming close or even is the Daiwa Zillion "crazy cranker.
  3. really.... thinking about it right now almost every bait my brother has is white
  4. really more hype than actual help.... I use Daiwa oil or even Rem-oil is good.
  5. had a few older Poe's lures all same color white deep divers .... heard this from David Fritts at a seminar at the st.louis boat show in 94 ... he talked a lot about this ... he hung them in his pick up truck.... well I "aged them by hanging in a window and WOW ... caught a few 4 pounders at a private lake last week when nothing else would work and tried all my go to baits.
  6. Heddon Magnum Hellbender I've seen so many big bass caught at Table-Rock on this lure.
  7. always my fav. 5' 6" now very hard to find especially in the upper quality range. nobody seems to offer them anymore.
  8. bought two of the older Browning Speed Spools BB1N when they were discoed. the boxes were kinda beat-up and one had the drag all the way down....with that being said it was fine still using it today.
  9. like said above balanced rod & reel
  10. I have thought about getting a reel "super-tuned" from time to time, but always thought by using it actually "broke" it in and when serviced & overhauled it basically was "tuned-up"..... with that being said my next reel is a MegaBass Lariat.
  11. I have a 1st gen. chronarch (1991) and still operates perfectly .... has a flipping switch also.
  12. one time using silver thread.... used a clinch knot (not recommended) by silver thread ....
  13. I tried them yrs. ago & never any success, unlike the tried & true original;; which always works.
  14. Thanks guys ! Truly appreciated !
  15. any opinions on this reel .... I bought one simply because of the 4:9 retrieve lowest one out there & very similar to the speed spools I used for years.
  16. (Ratios of 4.3:1, Retrieve at 4.7:1) the best.
  17. eight pounds is the lightest I've gone and only a few times, eg. conditions and all of that. if you must go lighter then its spinning gear. i think.
  18. thats an awesome bass !! what do really reccomend? I've caught a lot of 10 lb. + bass, but this swimbait has thinking "real" trophy. upshot if you could pull the trigger on the best set-up. I would like to know it. thanks in advance !
  19. "reel magic" is just "ju ju magic. its a waste of money; its just marketing. doesn't do sh****t for a reel or rod.
  20. I get the strong impression these reels are to be tossed after a season or two;I really like the new David Fritts reel, but wonder where do you get it serviced after 2 yrs. of hard use.
  21. Thanks Guys !! I've handled on and I'm impressed ! I think I've been "scorched" by the "bait monkey. 1991 and no changes I can appreciate that kind of design and all metal on top,
  22. Its time to upgrade my reels. My old Speed Spools have seen their day worn out. I have my eyes on the Shimano Calcutta 200 (silver color). Its all metal and has been unchanged since 1991. Aynone use them and what do you think of them? Thanks in advance !!!!!!!!!
