RIVER Smallie Thread
My best results on the Potomac are either drifting (usually tubes or craws....have had some success with Berkeley Gulp minnows and gobies too) or pitching up to the riffles as others have noted. Note to Yakangler. What river are you fishing in WV?

14' V-Hull stability?
I've got a 14' v-hull that I bought decking in it and have no probems with it at all. The decking at the front from the front seat forwars is at seat height. Mid-section has a deck about 4" lower than center bench seat fore and aft of that seat. Original aluminum bench seats have been toped with wood. Two swivel fishing seats added (one on front deck, one on rear bench. This is a tiller steer with an Evinrude 15 HP. Very stable even in the relatively few times i've had it on rough water. I am very comfortable standing, casting, and walking in it and I'm a big guy (6' 1", 250 lbs). Looking at re-decking and carpeting mine this spring to create some better below deck storage, relocate the batteries more forward and re-wire the boat.

Best line for spinning rig???
Does anybody have any experience with the clear (translucent?) braids? The river I fish mostly has sharp limestone rocks/ridges spanning the river. Tough on line and they love grabbing hold and snagging. Used regular braid with a lot of success but went to flouro for invisibility reasons. And yes, fishing braid I've straightened my share of hooks and brought a few logs up too. : Just wondering if the clear braids might be a good compromise?

Low Power/Thrust from MinnKota 40 PowerDrive
Thanks for the responses. the battery is about a year old. Seems to still be charging and holding a charge but I'll take a harder look at it. As far as the pedal...hmmm...that might be it. The throttle slider won't kick in until about 7 (on a scale of 10) or so so it could be the board. I opened it up...nice and dry inside. Cleaned out all the line but it does seem to have some still in between the prop shaft and the washer it passes through. Obviously the increased friction due to any line still stuck in there could also be why the power is down and the motor doesn't even start turning until 7 or so. Not sure how to pull that out as there was no obvious way to separate the prop from the washer. Any help with that?

Low Power/Thrust from MinnKota 40 PowerDrive
Went out on the Upper Potomac this AM and my TM had no guts! It was fully charged but acting as though it was at least 2/3 drained. Checked for fishing line wrapped around the shaft. There was some but the problem persisted even after I cleared it (no more power than before). Any ideas?

Able to put a deck/floor in a 14' v-hull?
I have a 14' V-hull similar to wheasle's with a casting deck at the front and rear and a lower sectio in the middle. Not tippy at all and I use it on the upper Potomac. As you said, I'd recommend that you make the decks so they fit right over the existing seatsat the front and rear with a lower section in the middle between the seats. Put a floor and carpets in there to keep the noise down. I have a swivel seat in the front and rear on a short (13"-15") pedestal to keep the CG lower when were moving. That being said, I can stand and cast without any difficulty. The only time it gets tippy at all is if I move fron the front to the back and I'm to one side. Then again I'm a big guy so just about anything would be tippy! That's all a long way of saying..go for it. These kind of boats ain't fancy but they do all I need to do.

Two fishfinders/transducers?
Well...it sounds like I'll be ok. Although the bost is small, the Upper Potomac where I fish (Smallies mostly) is for the most part shallow. However, it sounds like I don't need/want to get a dual frequency unit. That's ok because I use it mostly for finding structure anyways. Thanks for all the input. It is appreciated! p.s. Thought I was done fishing for the winter...put the boat away...but its supposed to get over 70 degrees this weekend. Loading it back up and I'll be out here again. Woo hoo! 8-)

Two fishfinders/transducers?
OK..this may be a stupid question but... Is there any problem with mounting two fishfinders, each with their own transducer on a boat. I have an old 14 ft aluminum that I bang around on the upper Potomac with. Have one transom mounted transducer connected to a Humminbird Matrix 17 in the back and want to add a fishfinder up front. I already have a trolling motor mounted transducer from another purchase. Since both transducers are operating at the same frequencies will there be any problem with interfernce with the two? Any info welcome...as I said, this may be a stupid question but before I drop the bucks on another fishfinder just wanted to be sure. Thanks.

Took a chunk or two out of my prop this weekend
SFC Hall, I fish on the upper Potomac, lots of rocks and at times, low visibility. I wish I could get the Jet conversion but too pricey for me for now. I installed one of these on my small outboard and I'm very happy with it. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat21276-cat420002_TGP&id=0000976013490a&navCount=1&podId=0000976&parentId=cat420002&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat420002&hasJS=true I've hit severall rocks since installing it and not a nick on the prop. It's a study rig, much stronger than I anticipated. It does require drilling some holes through the skeg. All in all it has given me peace of mind fishing on a rock filled river.

KL Pro or Sportfisher 120
Ok...so I'm thinking about getting my first boat and have been looking at the KL Pro 120 and KL Sportfisfisher 120. Both are 11'3" polystyrene boats. A complete package (boat, trailer, outboard) will run me ~$2, 500-$2,700). Looks good at first glance. Has eveything I need/want (built in storage/coolers, live well, rigged for trolling motor, etc.) but I'm not sure its big enough or has enough power to run on the Potomac (slow water near Harpers Ferry/Shepherdstown). Here's a link to a site selling these things: http://www.boatownersworld.com/kli/pro_120_bmt.htm Just wondering what everybody thinks.
