  1. I don't start threads as a rule but I will on this topic. I watched the Classic recap show after work. I thought, good deal. I want to see what they say about the top five. Some how they failed to mention second place, at all, what so ever. Okay, I have a bias and I'll admit it. I think Paul Mueller is a great guy and has a real career ahead of him. He set a classic record for largest single day weight. Well he's not one of the cereal box anglers but come on, to omit his accomplishment in the mix was shameful. Don't get me wrong, the accomplishments of Tharp, Evers and Howell should never be discounted but leaving the Federation guy's accomplishment out was a discredit to the program. I'm done. Time for my pills.
  2. My bass fishing mentor told me that where little fish are, big fish are close by. That is more true with smallmouth that seem to school by size more often than not. I like to consider forage size when picking lure size and profile. A couple of years ago I was at Clear Lake which has lots of big fish. The first two days were cold and stormy and I had to revert to a drop shot and managed two fish over seven pounds on a 4.5 inch reaper style bait. Be flexible.
  3. Well stated. Catt doesn't let the complexity of fishing get in the way of his fishing. I miss the guys like Ricky Green, Harold Allen, Tommy Martin and David Wharton.
  4. Dobyns Savvy 766 is a beast. It's well balanced and not tip heavy and would match with your PQ very well. Ron at Valley Sports is a Dobyns dealer and can get you into the rod and hit your budget I would bet.
  5. The speaker did no service to your club members. Learning and applying the drop shot technique should be a goal of any bass angler. Case in point: I was fishing off the coast for sea bass and Ling cod thirteen years ago. The snag rate was terrible. I brought some ball weights and large 4/0 worm hooks as an experiment and outfished my buddies 5 to 1, and that was in 60 feet of water in the ocean. Don't limit yourself.
  6. 1/2 ounce Spinnerbait Normans Deep Little N Luhr Jensen Speed Trap 1/2 ounce jig and Rage Craw Trailer Green Pumpkin Brushhog If its a smallmouth only trip, swap the Jig for a Robo worm and the Brushhog for a tube.
  7. I recall that article. It didn't go over with me then or now. I would like to think there are rod "classes", about five or so and many rod's capabilities overlap to many lure types and techniques. Some rod classes are narrower than others. The punching rod and ultra light finesse spinning come to mind but in between, many rods can do a lot.Catt excels in interpersonal sensitivity and does not want any of his rods to have a complex.
  8. Absolutely. Here's some information to help you decide further. The BB1 is built on a different frame platform than the other Lews models. The worm gear is further from the spool shaft. Ergonomics are still excellent for palming. The spool is larger for line capacity. This translates into holding the rate of line pick up when you make a long cast and have a lot of line off the spool. The BB1's cast control is very effective, centrifugal only but was designed with a sweet spot which is 3/8th to 3/4 ounce. When casting 1/2 ounce, it's a casting machine. Now there is an option that would benefit you and that's the BB1 Pro. I have three. It's the same frame platform. The cast control system is completely different from the BB1. It's still centrifugal but uses a type of rocker arms instead of pins. The adjustments are made externally with a dial that is recessed so you don't feel it when palming. The system works extremely well and is very progressive. The spool is braid ready. The Pro is lighter, the result of alloy gears similar to a Revo Premier and a carbon fiber handle. It's the 95 power handle. The Pro has a broader weight range and handles lighter weights better. Ron at VS is extremely competitive and I would call him. It's your investment but the BB1 Pro would be more versatile and cover all you spectrum of weight classes.
  9. If you have an expectation of respectful and courteous behavior from all or even most fans, at any sporting event, your beating your head against a brick wall. You are talking about PEOPLE. Being cynical isn't as bad as you think.
  10. Nixon was one of the many long time Diawa guys who was flushed out after 20 years or so. He spent some time with Abu before being dropped/separated. Gary Dobyns is now providing Nixon's rods for 2013/2014. I have followed his career for over 30 years and I don't recall him having a Berkley based rod. Edit: I stand corrected Catt. It was Fenwick and I confused Nixon with Jay Yelas when Yelas, Braur and Cochran were 86'd by Diawa.
  11. Roland Martin's Helicopter lure, Dancin' Eel, YUM 27 inch Lamprey Lure
  12. Did you ever drag the gut on Willamette Street in Eugene ?
  13. A-Jay, I worked with a guy named Bob who has since retired. We were having coffee one morning when we used to have time to do that and he was taking a gulp as I told the punch line to a joke. Bob couldn't even swallow and the coffee came out his nose. I gave him the nick-name " air pot " and he still wants to kick my butt for that.
  14. My best friend growing up had a family vacation cabin in LaPine Oregon. I met DD there when I was thirteen years old. We actually began to date when I was sixteen. We have been married for almost 41 years. Some of you know our recent story. She's doing well, far better than I could have ever hoped for. Prayer works.
  15. I was dispatched to a motel today to check on a guy stumbling into traffic and the caller felt they were on heroin. I see the guy make it into his room and he looks bad. He immediately starts eating Doritos. I tell him he doesn't look like he's doing Okay and ask him when he used last. He says he doesn't use drugs, it's a reaction from the Doritos because they are made with genetically engineered corn. Makes sense to me, have a nice day ! Last week, I see a guy driving a nice pickup and he's going from curb to curb like a pinball machine. I do the normal flip the overheads on and burp the siren and he pulls up on the sidewalk. I walk up and light up the cab to see him open a bottle cologne and guzzle about 4 ounces. Who needs Tic Tacs ? I asked him for his license and he takes about four minutes to go through his wallet and hands me a condom. I told him he was making a hasty judgement about me. I think he has to blow into a tube to start his truck now. I few weeks ago I go to a DV ( domestic violence for you rookies ) and the male half jumps out the back window in his tighty whiteys and takes off running. The youngins chase him on foot for about 8 blocks and I, being the seasoned veteran with bad knees drive my PC and stop him after he's run beyond his limits and apply handcuffs that are properly fitted and double locked of course. One of the junior beans who was a runner comes up and says he's going to take Prefontaine and put him in the back seat of his car. I tell him, NO. Just let him sit there for a minute and he can thank me later. A minute goes by and tightly whitey pukes his guts out on the street at curb side. I looked at junior bean and said " extreme exertion creates lactic acid and that results in projectile vomit. It's nice not to have to clean out the back seat huh ? You owe me coffee. " I love my job.
  16. I heard you closed the winding spool in the tailgate of your truck ?
  17. They sell them on line after midnight on cable channels.
  18. It's neat how Shimanos come in their very own body bags. Great arsenal!
  19. I love the quiet, the sound of red wing black birds, the little slaps of water against the side of the boat, the cool mist that spins off my reel as I make a long cast, and like A-Jay, making memories........ that I will forget because i'm getting too old to remember anything anymore. What was the question ?
  20. As much as I love tubes and Hula Grubs, I have to agree with A-Jay. The drop shot with a Robo Finesse Worm or Fat Goby is as reliable a bait and set up as there is out there. It's good for small schoolers and big fish alike. All three are tied on though. "Find em with a crankbait and catch them with plastics" is what my buddy taught me.
  21. Luhr Jensen Speed Traps. The Rodney Dangerfield of crankbaits.
  22. Spinnerbait, Rattle Trap, Speed Trap until about 1300 and then the pitchin' stick comes out with a jig. That's when I get out. At least I have a plan.
