New River (VA)
As far as safety goes, you'll be fine just about anywhere over there, but there are some spots on the Northern side of the lake up closer to Pearisburg and Narrows where the water runs a little quicker than I would care to be kayaking while attempting to fish, but overall you'll be fine.

New River (VA)
While I can't help you with canoe/kayak rentals in that area of the New River, I can tell you that you guys are DEFINITELY going to have some fun. The area around Claytor Lake is some really fun fishing, and right now they're jumping on anything you throw in there. haha. We were throwing Pumpkinseed lizards cut in half on a jig head, and were getting tired of pulling 'em off. This coming from the guy who couldn't catch a cold. haha. I caught 6 Redeyes and 3 smallies, buddy caught 7, over the span of about 45 mins. (evening time, it got dark.)

Hi, from Bluefield, WV/VA
Haha, thanks. I've been up your way a few times, mostly passing through on military travel, but I went to school in Morgantown for a while.

taking the spinner off an old Daiwa...
Haha, thanks! I'm pleased with it. Went ahead and cleaned/lubed it while I had it open.

Favorite Lure that doesn't work?
I know what you mean. This has just been a terrible year for me. x3 Count it 4! Lol. But my fav to throw when I'm hitting nothing are a couple of huge, ugly spinners I have. They're black/white and definitely scary. If I were a fish and it was headed for me, I'd run like hell (which is what happens) but I love watching them in the water.

taking the spinner off an old Daiwa...
For anyone interested, I didn't get it off, but I got the line out. If you take the Bail Spring and assembly off, there's a hole where the Bail Trip Lever goes... You can get a pair of hemostats or small needle-nose pliers in there and dig it out. Reel is smooth as glass now!

taking the spinner off an old Daiwa...
My post count is disallowing me to post links, so if you were to go to mike's reel repair and look at the diagram for a Daiwa J1350L, it would be part 6.

taking the spinner off an old Daiwa...
I may need to give you guys pics, but I have an old daiwa reel in AMAZING shape, 20 years old or more. It has some line caught up under the spinner (not the spool, the part that spins AROUND it, I'm not sure on terminology, but I think it's called a spinner, anyways) Anyhow, after removing the side plate and spool, it looks like I need a funny star-shaped tool maybe? There's a gear DIRECTLY behind the spinner (on the inside of the reel) Am I missing something, or do I need the funny star-shaped tool to remove it? It almost seems like if I were to reassemble it, and hold the crank, while turning the spinner, it would come off, but I gave it a LITTLE muscle, and then said: "No, I don't want to damage it." So if anybody knows, I'd definitely appreciate the help! I'll send pics of needed

Hi, from Bluefield, WV/VA
Thanks all. I've got A LOT to learn about bass fishing, but hopefully this will help out. ;-)

Hi, from Bluefield, WV/VA
Been lurking the forums for a while. I live in Bluefield, WV which lies on the WV/VA border at WV's southern border. The town is split between WV and VA, where 3 counties meet. Mercer Co. WV, Bland Co. VA, and Tazewell Co. VA. I'm basically a newbie. My tackle box consists of a couple spinners, some jigs, 3 crankbaits, and some soft plastics. None of which I can use effectively, and I often go out and catch 0 fish. That being said, a couple days ago I went out and caught 6 Rock bass (red eyes?) and 3 smallmouth. None much bigger than 8 inches long or so, but at least I had something on the end of the line other than my lure and a couple weeds. LOL. I fish the New River a lot, in different spots, to include Bluestone lake. I'm on the shore and/or wading more often than I'm in a boat, but I get the chance to go in a friend's boat on occasion.
