  1. Sounds like a pretty cool guy, I wish I could have known him. My sympathies to you and the family.
  2. So, you're taking over the new Martha Stewart line? ;D ;D ;D Nice work, Russ...seriously...
  3. Man, looking at that pic makes me want to drop right off your deck, George! That's it, I'm taking my skis to get tuned tomorrow!
  4. My dad wasn't really the teching sort, but he would let me watch him do some stuff (as long as I kept my mouth shut...) and I learned quite a bit that way. Other than that, the only way I learned most of that DIY stuff through trial and error (i.e. Turn off the water before you take apart that leaky faucet...). I think kids need to be taught some of the basic parts of fixing things around the house, not to become a carpenter of plumber, but the basics. Schools teach kids basic knowledge in a lot of areas, but I have yet to see "Handyman 101" listed in any college course catalogs. Might save us all some time and money if they did...
  5. Now THAT'S funny...
  6. Some friends of mine went boarding at Big Boulder last week, said it was kinda snowing when they left. Sounds like they should have stayed...
  7. I'd always wondered why Northern Jersey looked like that...now we know...

  9. Are you sure those were his ashes? The urn looked kinda small. Ouch!
  10. BRING ON THE SNOW!!! I would LOVE to get in a few days skiing before New Year's this year. Last year I didn't make my first tracks until the end of January. BTW, for all you New England skiers, most VT mountains are making snow like crazy and plan to be open in some capacity before thanksgiving! THINK SNOW!
  11. To hades with all the "main stream" media; one pundit is as bad as another, no matter what "news" you watch. For me, I tend to get my politcal info from 3 great sources: The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and my favorite, Real Time with Bill Maher. Although there's lots of jokes with these outlets, they still "report" the news in a way that is entertaining as well as informative. Specifically speaking on Real Time, I find that not only is Bill Maher well read and intelligent, he also has the insight to have people of opposing views on his panel. Recently I saw an interview with Garry Kasparov (the chess guy) who is running against Putin in Russia. Until I saw this program, I had no idea as to how badly things had gotten over there. Russia is a great big politcal mess right now, and it seems its not far away from the ways of Stalin and KGB like activities. Perhaps the "reporting" on this show is a wee bit suspect, but it did alert me to world events in a way that made me go and find more information from several different sources so I could get an objective view of all that's going on. CNN and MSNBC have never made me want to go and find out more, they usually make me change the channel to ESPN or something...
  12. Not to detract anything from his "mixing with the little people," but did anyone catch his selfless gesture of pocketing the last pitch from the World Series? Say he gave it to Pepelbon, who says he has no idea where it is... Someone should check his trophy case...
  13. I'm with Tank on this one. I think that Indy's defense is going to make all the difference in this game. Either way, I'm sure its going to be one of the best games all season, full of plenty of highlights. This is the game they should have scheduled for England...
  14. What the? Is this the first sign of the appocalypse? After all these years of trying to get NFL Europe to work you'd think that someone would have figured out that Europeans don't really care that much for American football. All this is is a bad publicity stunt that will leave Roger Goodell with a bad taste in his mouth. If it were an exhibition, then I'd say, "Hey, great! Just like the time they played in Mexico City and Japan!" However, this is the regular season, and it's not at all fair to the players to have to go across the pond to play when they have such a busy, hectic schedule as it is. Thankfully, my Giants are looking pretty good in the last few games and should put on a show, but the Dolphins? C'mon, that's no way to promote football. Pick a couple teams that might interest a few people over there. I would actually rather see the Superbowl played in England than a regular season game. At least there's a 2 week period for the players to adjust and would make for a much better game than we're going to see this afternoon. Call me cynical, but this is just a really dumb idea...
  15. So they say...I tend to let games be out for a couple months before I buy so that I can spend 2 hours dl-ing patches to make the thing work. I'm thinking my next game is going to be Unreal Tournament 4 (or 2k7 as some are calling it). I loved the first 2 versions, so I'm thinking the new one will be pretty good. Can't wait to play some capture the flag!
  16. I'm not much for FPS, but I do seriously get into MMOG (That's Massive Multi-player Online Games) like Vanguard. I haven't played in a while (I just can't get into paying each month for a video game...) so I'm re-installing Diablo 2. Anyone interested in Sci-Fi types games can chat it up with some of my buds at www.b-e-e-r.org and tell 'em MoonRoach sent ya in.
  17. Thank you counselors for that opening statement. As you know, I am Judge Itiet, and I will be presiding over this case. I have alerted the media, so don't be afraid of every major and minor television network having their cameras in here. I have read all the pertinent facts, and I can tell this is going to be a long drawn out case, possibly taking several years to come to conclusion. The evidence has been, and will be, submitted, and the grand jury has returned with an indictment. The defendant, Mr. Hookers, will be kept in protective custody for the entirety of these procedings in a large brown truck, while the prosecutor gathers more evidence, pays off a few witnesses, and tries to find something usefull to this case. Counselors, it's now time to interview the jury members. Mr. Ronnie Alpster, representing the tall people, will have first go, as well as his associates. Gentlemen, the floor is yours...
  18. Great work, Muddy! Once again you've proved that even a Mook has heart!
  19. Muddy said it best up above. Joe Torre knew what he was up against when he signed with the Yankees in '96. In essence, what the Yankees organization did was give Joe a chance to say no to a deal rather than outright firing him...Its obvious that the deal would have been rejected, to you, me, and I'm sure, the Yankees front office as well. So instead of throwing Torre out, Torre is throwing the Yankees out, and he keeps his dignity, and we avoid an even bigger media circus than we have now.
  20. Nice stuff, Dom, I can always count on you for good blues picks! I saw Etta some years back and man, what a show she put on. She had me riveted for the whole set. The reat of the show was pretty good too: John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, and B.B. King. Not a bad night at Jones Beach...
  21. Always go with the Pony. Friends don't let friends drive GMs...
  22. Before I get into this, let me say I am as big a Yankee fan as there is (I even mowed the logo into my mom's lawn one summer ). I am also a huge supporter of Joe Torre. I believe he's as great a Yankee manager as Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel and Ralph Houk. That being said... Michael Kay, one of the Yankees TV announcers, brought up an interesting idea on ESPN radio yesterday. Basically, he said that when Torre first brought the titles and winning back to NY, everybody praised him and said how great he is. Now that the Yankees have gone out in the 1st round 3 years in a row, no blame has really been put on Torre at all, rather, they blame the roster. How good a job would that be? Getting all the praise when things are going great, and when things go bad, well its not your fault. Some accountability has to be placed on Joe. With the lineup the Yanks had in the last 5 years, we all said its a fore-gone conclusion that the Yanks win it all. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened, so maybe a changing of the coaching staff is in order. I'm not saying Joe Torre isn't an amazing manager, I'm just saying that maybe its time for a change... On a side note, has anyone noticed how the Yankees don't win when Jason Giambi is on the squad? They haven't won with him, either. Even this year, before he came off the DL, the Yankees were playing lights out ball and had Boston actually scared. When he came back, they still did well, but not nearly as well as without him. Just some food for thought... BTW, don't look for LaRussa to come to NY. Not too many people think he could handle the team, or the media for that matter. Look for the Yanks to sign either Don Mattingly or Joe Girardi as the new manager...
  23. Generally speaking, I never "horse" a fish that's taking line. Chances are you'll tear a larger hole in his mouth and its that much easier for the fish to spit the hook. Keep the rod tip up, tighten your drag, and wait for him to tire out a bit. Get's 'em in the boat every time...well, usually...
  24. Er, is Cash Cab a fishing show? Well, I guess sometimes Ben Bailey is "fishing" for a laugh... When Versus channel isn't being a shill for Cabellas and BPS, I find it to be a pretty good channel for bass, especially The Bass Pros. ESPN had some good shows on Saturday morning, but since I've been working Friday nights I am rarely up early enough to see them, or even know if they're still on...
  25. Generally, you want to fish the drops leading to the creeks and channels and not necessarily the creeks themselves. If the bass are getting into fall mode, they will be in "ambush" mode where they can swoop down into those cuts to eat bait fish. Find the slope on your fish finder, and try to get the best drift along that ridge. If the drift isn't conducive to the bottom contours, then throw the anchor and work the area fully before moving on.
