NE Bassfishing in October
I was pretty much on the worst run of my life for fishing a few weeks ago. I coudn't catch a fish if I used dymanite. I know the lake I fish has PLENTY of fish, but I couldn't find any bass at all. Turns out, I was fishing the wrong end of the lake. This time of year in the NE, the fish are still pretty active, but they want to be in the warmer waters, I think, where the grasses are still alive. Try fishing in the southeren end of lakes and t-rig a watermellon colored tube with 1/8th oz bullet. Let the bait get down into the weeds and even let it hang up. 75% of the time, you'll pull up a big clump of grass, but all those other times you'll get a nice fish if you let the bait get down (and I mean DOWN...) into the bottoms of the grasses. Good luck!

Missed Fish!!!
I only use 2/0 and 3/0 EWG hooks (usually Eagle Claw), and don't lose too many fish with them, whether I'm using a senko or a tube or any soft plastic. My suggestion is to let the bass "eat" a little longer before setting the hook. This time of year, at least up in the Nor' east, the fish are a little soft on the bite. If I know a fish is playing with my bait, I'll wait a good 2-3 seconds before setting the hook to make sure it's actually got the hook in its mouth and not just hanging onto the tail.

Hard Water is on the Horizion for us Northeners
I'm kinda torn on the seasons. On one hand, I love to fish and winter just isn't very conducive to that. On the other hand, I love to ski and can't wait for there to be snow on the mountains. Now, if I could find a way to ski and fish at the same time...

help-spotted bass or largemouth bass?
As for the colorings on fish, there's a few different factors, some of which have been said above. Most fish, salt water included, "light up" when they are in an excited feeding mode, which means that their skin colors get more blood flowing to it, which brings out the more distinctive patterns. A lot of times when you catch a bass and he's all black in the back and sides, he may have been tired out from the fight and the blood isn't as oxygenated and the skin patterns will fade. Water temp will also make a difference. I find bass caught in the colder months will be less dynamicaly colored than warmer water bass. Bass can also actively change their coloration to fit in with surroundings, much like a salamander or a frog. Finally, genetics play a part. Some bass have more color than others just as a result of breeding. Hope this helps...

Disheartening
In my experience, I try to follow 3 general rules when it comes to posting on forums: 1) If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. 2) Don't do anything to anyone that you wouldn't want done to you. 3) Discretion is the better part of valor.

NATURAL LAKES
Muddy, since you're from NY, you know that Long Island only has natural lakes, for the most part. The lake I live on is a spring fed lake that was originally created during the last glacial retreat, but there are no "natural" rocks (a few cinder blocks here and there but no real rocks). Its because of this that the bass spend so much time in the grass beds all over the lake. This time of year, I find the bass holding the grass in the southern portion of the lake, not only around the grass, but litterally deep in the weeds. I worked a couple different colors of 6" senkos with only a little luck, and the same with a 4" power worm. Day before yesterday I switched up to a watermelon tube t-rigged (1/8th oz bullet) and started slamming the bass. I guess the tube got into the deep grass better than the other plastics? I thought about using a jig, but seeing as I am not too experienced with a jig, I decided to stick with the tube. Other than that, I can only say that this time of year they are no longer in the few bushes along the shore, but in the deeper parts of the lake (if you consider 15 feet deep). Hope this helps...

Best DUI ever!!!
As funny as that is, I do think it is "staged." I am not certain, but it looks and sounds to me like its from "Reno 911!"...

A few weird things I saw while fishing today......
Other geese migrating with Canada geese is nothing to get alarmed at, just take it as a chance to see a brid you'd never get a chance to otherwise see. Not as uncommon, but I have seen Blue geese share the sky with Canada geese. As for the frogs, well, that is a bit disturbing, since chances are they'll make it through the winter and adapt to their surroundings, mate with the local frogs, and create a race of SUPER FROGS! Ever see that movie Frogs? This is how that stuff starts! Watch out, America, we're about to be overrun by amphibians! Oh, the humanity!

Just watched the fight this morning. Wow, what a great fight! I love watching the smaller guys rather than the heavy-weights for the action and the strategy. A better fight than the Hopkins-Wright matches lately...

Name that tune-Rock
I was a HUGE aerosmith fan for a long time, until it seemed like they sold out (well, sorta sold out...), but I have to disagree with the idea that Get a Grip is their best album. I'm surprised no one mentioned Toys in the Attic. Not only is it their best album, IMHO, but it is one of those "must have" albums to make a record collection complete, like Zeppelin 4 or The White Album.

The one, and only IMO, downside to drinking good beer is that it is expensive. On the other hand, better beers usually have a higher alcohol content so it won't take you as many to get buzzed...

Hunting Radios
When my buds and I go skiing, we use motorolas, never seem to have too much touble with LoS, but we do get a lot of, "Bob, where are you? I've got the kids and..." until we can find a clear channel... The radios are pretty sturdy as I can attest when took a header, smakced into a tree, broke my goggles and a pole, but the radio held up fine... You can get a "matched pair" at wal-mart pretty cheap...

Name 1 thing you learned
The most important thing I've learned can't be attributed to any one person here since I've heard so many say the same thing: When using soft plastics, go slow...and whe you think you're going slow enough, slow it down even more.

casting-*VIDEO added*
While LBH gets a vid together for ya, if you have ever tried skip casting, Skillet has the technique written out pretty well. The only thing I'll add is that you want to release the line like you're making and underhand throw with a baseball, or if you play golf, its a lot like hitting a sand shot (the release, not the swing ). And like both these analogies, keep your hands "soft," or, rather, don't try to force the bait to your target. It takes a bit of practice, but it is an invaluable casting tool for getting into tight cover.

Lots of dead fish Why?
I am of the idea that it was more from lawn chemicals running into the lake than low levels of oxygen. Though the cold rain may have lower o2 levels than warmer water, the act of it rainning should actually raise the levels of oxygen by stirring up the water that's already there, kind of like an aerator in a live well...
