  1. I would try swimming a jig then. All you need to do is try and get a reaction bite and swimming a jig is perfect for that.
  2. ^X2. Thats great customer service. I had an OLD shakespeare spinning reel, the first one I ever had since I was 6. The little spring for the bail broke. I called them about it and they actually mailed me two of them for free and I got them in 3 days!!! I was very impressed.
  3. From watching Kevin Short on the Elite Series, I would try cranks around the trees. Flippin and pitchin to the trees might work too but many times the fish are suspended around the trunks and not holding tight to the bottom. So once you find out what depth they are at, you can nail them. Also, when you catch a fish, study the size of the tree you caught it off of and if the tree is close to other trees or out by itself.
  4. X2 on the SOT. I have used and fished out of both and a SOT is by far the best. I have a wilderness systems Tarpon 120 with rod holders, milk crate, anchor trolley, etc. i use it on the Upper James River for smallies and on some smaller streams. A SOT is much easier to fish out of. You don't get wet at all. And most SOT are more stable than a sit in kayak. Also, buy a GOOD quality paddle. Most guys skimp on that and it will cost you. Its like a good fishing rod. Remember, that is your only source of propulsion so you want it to be light and comfortable. If I were to get a yak for largemouth fishing, I would get a Wilderness Systems Ride 135. It has a ton of room and is super stable. I just like my 12 foot tarpon for manuverability in the tight flowing rivers I use it in.
  5. Thanks guys. I had a hunch you probably already had a thread on it. I am still going through the forum looking at past threads trying to learn some new info.
  6. It is illegal to place crab pots in designated channels(atleast in the Bay and in rivers) so crab fisherman try to put their pots as close to channel (hence deep water) as possible if thats where they think the crab are. So, the "edge" that crab pots create can show where a drop off/ledge but usually that is just the edge of the designated channel. The best thing to do would be look at your depthfinder and find a substantial ledge. A navionics chip is even better.
  7. Try to find some structure that is under the water. This structure will hold bass when it is hotter and if the pond does have some fishing pressure, this will most likely be overlooked by the average joe bass fisherman. Good luck.
  8. That is a cool idea. I guess it could happen but the closest thing to that right now is Ultimate Match fishing. To tell you the truth, I like watching Ultimate Match Fishing more than the elite series. I love the competiion of it. It does show you the reason why the Elite series got rid of the co-anglers. IMO good choice.
  9. I don't know if there is already a thread on this, but BASS has been sold by ESPN. There are three investors that have bought the rights, including Jerry McKinnis. How neat is that? Supposedly, all the Elite Series events will still air on ESPN which is a good thing. i have heard many people say that BASS went down hill after ESPN bought it. I have no opinion on that because I am not old enough to have witnessed it. But maybe there will be some future changes for the good of BASS.
  10. A shallow diving crank like a baby minus-1 is a great choice. Also, weightless stick baits like senkos or a Case Magic Stik are great options. Senko style lures are my go to choice in new ponds, especially casting them to strucuture like stumps and trees.
  11. I have been a member of tidalfish for years but obviously no bass fishing info like on here but the largemouth fishing reports have greatly diminished on there. I just get on there during striper fishing season.
  12. Any time I get to fish but I prefer late sept.-october. Mostly because the water temp. is not too cold but also because November means pulling out the big boat to chase stripers out on the Chesapeake Bay.
  13. Usually i launch out of Osborne or Deep Bottom. I will probably try up in the barge pit and old river channel for some bass and I know of a crappie hole that always produces. I usually don't go that far down the river but I might try it when I go. Right now, it looks like I will be comin home the first weekend in october so I am sure the water temp. will be dropping some.
  14. For spinning reels, I use a LH reel. For baitcaster, RH reel. I don't know why. A LH baitcast reel just feels really awkward but a LH spinning reel doesn't. Same motion though. Thats just how I started fishing.
  15. Also try a weightless WHTITE senko style lure. I like Case Plastics Magic Stik. Looks identical to a senko but about half the cost. I fish it on berkely fireline crystal braid with about a 6 foot mono leader. Deadly in ponds, especially murky ones.
  16. Bass are opportunistic feeders. They eat stuff when they have the chance. Many bass will NEVER see an actual worm on the bottom of the lake. Why do they eat it? because they are hungry and trying to survive so they have to take every chance to eat and survive.
  17. Yeah, wayne is right. The lower end is where the dam is and at the very end of the lake on the right side if you are facing the dam is where the "warm" water comes out of the hot side. The lower end has a lot of big creeks leading in. Once you get up past the route 208 bridge a little ways is where the lake splits into the two rivers that feed it. Up there is usually better fishing during the hot summer months.
  18. I go to VT too. R u on the bass fishing team? My name is Macon Alexander. I was there last night at the meeting. Anyway, right now the water is starting to cool down (on the cold side atleast) and the bass are starting to push up a little shallower chasing bait just like the stripers do. I would recommend searching around the middle to lower end of the lake looking for schools of bait or fish breaking on the surface (especially on secondary points). Throw flukes or shad imatating lures at the schools of fish. Some fish are still positioned on drop offs so if the current is running, cranking the drop offs or points could work well too.
  19. Anyone been fishing on the Lower James in VA lately? Goin home from college soon to do a little fishin over a long weekend and was wondering if anyone is catching good numbers of bass or crappie. Thanks.
  20. Browsed on this forum for a couple weeks and seems like a lot of good info so decided to join. Right now I am in Blacksburg, VA for college(Go Hokies) so fishin time is limited. Looking forward to learning some more stuff.
