Cold Tournament this Sunday
Thought we were going to finally break free of winter, but another cold front is coming in this weekend. Water hasn't warmed up a lot yet. Temps still in the mid 40's. Air temps are projected to be 24 L-40 H for the next 4-5 days. We have a tournament on Sunday when we launch it it supposed to be only 26 with a high of 39 later in the day. The lake has been sprayed for the last two years and there is not much vegetation growing anywhere anymore. There is a large area at the end of the lake that has lilly pads, but I am sure they are not all the way up yet, plus most of it is only about 2 feet deep. There are a few points, and a couple of ridges in the lake. There is also a small hump in one area of the lake. There are also a couple of islands, as well as, 4-5 channels. There is also a small stump field that is in 3-4 feet of water. The islands have down trees and brush along them. Any thoughts?? I have never fished in this cold of water before. I figure them to be tight to cover, but I also figure them to be deep. I was thinking spoons and jigs for the deeper points and ridges, then some type of soft plastic for pitching to the isolated timber on the islands. Maybe a shallow square billed crank for around the stump field. What are some techniques you guys would try?

Funniest things you have seen on the water
I was fishing across a small lake from a couple of guys who were duck hunting from a boat. They had called a few in and I quit fishing to see how good of a shot these guys were. The ducks were flying directly at the boat when the guys cut loose and began shooting. They hit one of the ducks and it continued its original path straight at the guys boat. Turns out it was heading straight at the guy who was at the front of the boat. At this point the guy had two choices: get drilled by a dead duck traveling at a high rate of speed, or jump into 45 degree water. He chose the latter just in time. The guy looked like he would have been running on water as fast as he got out of that boat. The duck ended up hitting the floor of the boat right where the guy was standing. I went over to see if the guy needed any help. There was a dent in his aluminum boat where the duck hit. Fortunately the guy was in pretty good spirits about the deal, and was laughing about it when he was trying to get back into his boat. I'll never forget that guy scrambling around trying to decide what to do.

How many casts will you make to one spot?
I threw at a pair of rocks in the river one time for what seemed like a half an hour. It was just a perfect area where two rocks formed a large V shape in the water. I just knew there was a big smallmouth in there. There was actually a 20 lb. flathead that was waiting in there. Good fight in the river.

When your lure isn't producing
I rarely change colors as I try to determine that by water clarity. Change tactics and presentations before I change the color. However, there are those days where the off colored stuff works better than what should.

Wisconsin's Best Largemouth Fishing
I fished Long Lake a few years ago and did really well. It was near the Spooner Area. I think it was just a little southeast of Spooner. Caught a lot of bass everyday with a few pike thrown in. Everyone else on the lake was fishing for walleye. Didn't appear to be much pressure at all on the bass.

Oh boy, the magic time is here !
Dang Beastie! I guess I need to move a few hours south. I live about an hour north of Indianapolis and we still have a good 10 inches of ice on all the lakes, with another 6 inches of snow coming tomorrow night. This has been the longest winter I can remember.

Ice fishing near Boundary Waters in Minnesota
My boss asked me a couple of months ago if I wanted to go up to Minnesota to ice fish and ride snowmobiles. His parents live near South International Falls. I was pumped because I have never ice fished in Minnesota before, and the snowmobiling would be fun too, but I was more interested in the fishing. He tells me on Friday that we may not be able to go fishing because his dad does not think there is sufficient ice due to all the snow they have gotten. It was -40 there a few weeks ago. I know that the snow will insulate the ice and not allow it to produce ice the same as if it there was no snow on top. My question for the guys in the general area of upper Minnesota "is this possible"? In Indiana we do not get the snow that Minnesota gets, but we got a lot this year and we have 9-13 inches on all of our lakes that I fish. My boss wants to go up for the snowmobiling. I don't know if he is telling me this just so we have to snowmobile for three days and not fish, or if this is for real. Any info would be greatly appreciated. The name of the lake is Kabetogama.

Your Improvements for 2011?
I will be trying to improve my mindset while on the water. My biggest problem is always going to the spots I have caught fish before. I am not all that willing to go to "more likely fish catching places", as opposed to going to places I am comfortable with. I will also be working on the drop-shot. Not used it much, but I believe it will greatly improve my success.

Boots
I just purchased a pair of Columbia Boots recently for ice fishing and deer hunting. Wore them on Sunday morning when I was ice fishing when it was 6 degrees and the wind was blowing pretty hard. My feet never got cold. They were kind of pricey at $130.00, but I got them on sale for $85.00 so it was a good deal.

Hello from Indiana
I live about an hour north of Indianapolis. Yes, I have been to the Indy 500 a couple of times. Not a big race fan, but figured I should see it. The infield is where the real action is

New to this site need help with info on Electric Anchor Lift
My dad is wanting to install an electric anchor lift in his boat. My mom asked me to see if I could find one for him as a Christmas gift, and order it for her. I do not know much about them. I have done a search and found several, mostly Minn Kota, but the majority of the reviews on them are not good. But I do not know if the people that provide the reviews are not using the lift properly, i.e. taking off with the anchor still down. I was wondering if any of you guys have one, have used one, or if you just would like to give some info. It is for an 18 foot War Eagle aluminum boat. It has a 60 horse Yamaha on it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I would like to go with the Minn Kota, but would like gather more information first.
