  1. Yes. I try matching the line diameter of the braid & leader as close as possible because I feel I get better knots that way. So if I'm using 12lb leader I wouldn't go lower than 40lb braid. I fished with one rod for a year & was set up the same way. Used a leader for my slower presentations and often tied direct to moving baits. Tie with an uni uni knot and your good to go.
  2. I rarely use swivels & on the rare occasion I do it's on fast moving treble hook baits. I've had to many break on me to feel comfortable using them so I tie direct 95% of the time. For things like frogs I use 40-50lb braid and tie with a palomar knot which I trust more than any swivel clip.
  3. All good advice in this thread. Almost all my fishing lately has been at night time from my yak. First, always wear your pdf! As far as lighting I carry a headlamp with high/low/red beam, battery powered glow stick & a good flashlight w/ extra batteries. Make sure anything that isn't strapped down or leashed has some type of float. Don't forget bug spray it'll ruin your night. I also couldn't agree with Flyfisher's post more.. keep a black jitterbug tied on.
  4. Well it depends on what kind of fishing you plan on doing and if you're doing it during the day or at night. I have a Wild River backpack I use when hiking or on the kayak. It carries 4 3600 boxes (cranks, jerkbaits, topwater & terminal tackle), 2 3500 boxes (1 for jigs 1 for trailers), small box with about 20 spinnerbaits/buzzbaits & a bag full of all my soft plastics. I strap the bag upright behind me in my SOT kayak to use as added back support and I'm still able to get to everything inside. I also have sunglasses, line for leaders, digital scale, soft tape measure, sunscreen, bug spray, spare knife, flashlight w/ extra batteries and probably a couple more little things just in the bag. Besides tackle I also carry 3 rods (1 spinning 2 bc), a ziplock container for my phone & wallet which I keep in the dry storage, anchor, a soft cooler with drinks in the back & an ashtray with a lid that's velcro'd in the cup holder. It sounds like a lot but with almost everything kept in the bag it probably takes less than 5 minutes for me to be setup and in the water. The only thing left for me to figure out is a fish finder. The best advice I can give is to go paddle and figure out what would work best for you. Edit: Also do yourself a favor and make rod floats or get leashes
  5. This is what I do a lot. I also like to let them fall and give it a good rip off the bottom before retrieving.
  6. Lots of good advice in this thread. Like everyone else said buy yourself a nice PDF that you wont mind keeping on. I personally carry 3 rod setups with me (6'6" m/f spinning, 6'9" mh/f baitcaster & 7'2" mh/xf baitcaster) I prefer longer rods for casting distance and I like being able to swing the rod tip around the front of my 12' yak when fishing a fish. As far as packing gear all mine are in plano boxes in a backpack. I put some padding on the bottom and strap the backpack directly behind me to lean on for added back support. The best advice I can give you is to go fishing and add/adjust things to fit you.
  7. Thank you all for the help. I was searching around last night for pictures and/or video of how to run the wires and it seams like theres a couple ways to go about hiding everything.
  8. The Lowrance model I looked at was actually the Elite-4X HDI
  9. I'm looking to add a fish finder to my kayak and was hoping I could get some opinions on the Garmin Echo 300 and the Lowrance Elite-4 DSI. Those seam to be the best in my $200 price range. Also would something like this battery work for all day fishing? http://www.cabelas.com/product/Boating/AutoBoat-Batteries-Chargers/Marine-Deep-Cycle-Batteries%7C/pc/104794380/c/104698080/sc/104446080/Cabelas-Rechargeable-12-Volt-Battery/700551.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fmarine-deep-cycle-batteries%2F_%2FN-1100564%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104446080%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104794380%253Bcat104698080&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104794380%3Bcat104698080%3Bcat104446080 I'm new to kayak fishing and don't know how I would set this up in a 12' SOT so any pointers would be appreciated.
  10. Been fishing Delaware River channels in gloucester/camden county. Got some nice bass the past couple weeks on shallow cranks and spinner baits. Been seeing alot of snakeheads caught on rubber worms and frogs too.
  11. I've been fishing from the bank in 6 feet of water or less. Been having good luck with bluegill color spinnerbaits and shad color crankbaits. Even got a descent catfish on the bluegill spinner the other day, which was a first for me. I've caught a few nice pickerel using a black buzzbait in 1-2ft too.
  12. So the ceramic insert or whatever it's called on my top guide broke. I went to Dicks and purchased the Fuji guide repair kit, but when I got home I realized the ones in the kit seamed much larger. I went to a local tackle shop to see if they had anything smaller but no luck. I was wondering where to purchase the right guide tip and what size I'm going to need. Rod is an all purpose kistler mag ts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  13. Curado 50E. I have yet to try a curado and since it seams the 50 is being discontinued I thought now would be a good time to get my hands on one. I'll be pairing it with my Kistler Mag. I was a little skeptical ordering a reel I've never tried but with all the hype around the Curado series I'm sure I'll be satisfied.
  14. I meant to ask if I could exchange the PQ for another reel besides the PQ. I wasn't sure if the exchange would have to be a PQ or another BPS product. I was told by two BPS employees that I just send the PQ in and if the reel I'm exchanging it for is a higher cost to include a check with the amount due.. So that's what I did.
  15. I sent the PQ out this morning.. Why would they give me a different reel? Idon't know, but they didn't seam to have a problem doing so.
  16. So it seams I'm having trouble with my PQ. While fishing this morning I felt the reel starting to lock up. I know very little about reels but it looks like the pinion gear isn't being held in place properly. I purchased this reel in march of this year, so I know the warranty is still good. My question is, if I ship it out to get replaced do I have to exchange it for the same reel?
  17. EDIT- Having problems with mine right now..
  18. Most of this year I'd catch something half of the time I went out. About two months ago I started telling myself I'm not going home without catching something, and it's been good so far. It's deffinatly got me trying new things and I feel I've become a better angler because of it. Most of the stuff I've been doing is stuff I see suggested to others here on BR. I know I haven't gotten skunked since..
  19. I use braid on all my rigs. I use a leader only when fishing non moving baits..
  20. Thank you all for the advice. After doing lots of research and looking around locally for inflatable boats and kayaks I went ahead and ordered the 4 person Fish Master. Should my 35lb trolling motor work well with this boat? Also has anybody put a fish finder on there inflatable? If so, how did you mount it?
  21. I also started using a BC reel recently. I started out with a 3/4 lure with the brakes set between 5 & 7 casting sidearm until I started getting use to thumbing the spool. Once I got a little more comfortable I casted as far as I could, pulled out an additional 10-15 yards of line off the spool and put a small piece of tape on the spool. This helped from the backlashes getting deep into the spool and saved me a lot of time untangling line. As I got use to it I just started setting the brake lower and trying different lure weight..
  22. I cast with right and reel with right. I do this on BC and spinning gear. It's something I've always done..
  23. The only dog attacks I ever hear of are those involving pits. I believe many of these attacks are caused by being mistreated by owners. I've been around these dogs practically my whole life and personally couldn't ask for more loyal, loving dogs.
  24. Alright so I've been looking around for something to get me out on the water that I can transport in my car. I'd be using it on lakes only, no rivers. I have a small jon boat to fish from, but unless my mom lets me borrow her truck for the day I'm unable to get it to the lake. Because of that I find myself fishing from shore 90% of the time. I began looking at some inflatable boats, like these: http://www.amazon.com/Intex-Excursion-5-Boat-Set/dp/B00177J4UC http://www.amazon.com/Sevylor-Fish-Hunter-Inflatable-4-Person/dp/B0032GM1QA/ref=sr_1_9?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1298570701&sr=1-9 The main problem I think I'd have with these boats is not being able to stand. I was wondering if anybody here has made a floor or found another cheap alternative to stand while fishing..? I've read of a few people using 1/2" plywood and indoor/outdoor carpet for added stability, but I haven't seen anything about standing & casting. I'm a small guy, 5'9" about 150lbs or less, and will occasionally have my fishing partner or girlfriend with me at most, so weight shouldn't be an issue. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
