  1. WHEEEW what a pork belly! Doubt that your gonna be able to compare pics... now that you've got an on-board photographer your pics are getting much better
  2. I don't mind bringing ya, I'm in lawrence too so that'd be easy... The 20th seems to work for a few of us.. should we just plan for that?
  3. hehe. Maybe we should get the the day figured out first. 10/6 or 10/20 what is better for everyone? We got a whole month to figure out the fun part: where. Also know that the lake time is flexible, i'm sure a few of us will fish both saturday and sunday morning... some guys might just be able to make one or the other...
  4. I know I might be in the minority but for a get together I'd rather fish a smaller lake with a good population that also has the upside of a 3 plus pounder. I don't think 4-8 boats would crowd a 200 acre lake too bad, plus it's fun to shoot the **** out there a bit... The only ones I can think of with that perfect of population are Atchison, Miami, and Bourbon but there could be more... There is a great cabin at Atchison we could reserve and fish that Warnock that Blue was talking about too. Two good lakes that close together provides more water to cover for those who want it... Perry works two but were gonna spend the same amount camping all put together that we would on a cabin, and you have to fire up the big engine so much to cover all the spots that are worth a ***** to fish... On a small lake we could all fish the entire thing and see what happens.. Just my .02
  5. Blue helped out a boatless brother yesterday and let me ride along as he went to Perry. We got there pre-dawn and he didn't have his rigs ready so while he was tying up I threw a black buzzbait around the cove as we trolled a little... I was kinda surprised I didn't get a bite or anything... When he's finally done stripping & restringing a reel, then tying on several in the dark (3 min later...) He throws in.... BAMMMM first cast is a 1+ pound smalllie.... Next cast BAMMMM.. he's into one again can't remember what it was... Third cast... You guessed it.... BAMMM at least that one was probably a friggin Drum. At this point i'm wondering if I shoulda just brought a 6pack and lawn chair instead of my fishing gear for the day... But it turned around quickly enough after I dropped the buzzbait for a squarebill and we got into a school of whites and got to land a few of them at least and i got a largemouth right around 2 lbs at the next spot. Turns out we were catching the tail end of the coldfront blowing in from due north, once the scattered clouds let the bluebird skies and hot sun in the bite slowed down a ton. I think he ended up with 10 greens/browns and I only got that 1 from the morning... but I think mine held big bass honors till about noon Oh, and also we helped a hooker in the tiniest pink bikini I've ever seen unsnag her line...THAT was interesting.. The game in Topeka must be getting rough if the gals have to resort to 'fishing' down at the marina hehe
  6. FANTASTIC, well composed, report! Glad the deep running cranks were working for you... If you do the work you might as well reap the reward. I'd like to fish all of those lakes, but have only done NEBO. It's a big bass lake and the only downside in this case is it is NOT a small bass numbers lake. A great test for any serious fisherman because the bite will likely be as subtle as your presentation must be to get bit. It's so quiet up there and the lake so small I think they hear most anglers coming a mile away. Even if you are washing your boat, it's good that Xiong makes the point, just as a reminder. I like to take multi-lake roadtrips too and I've found the easiest way to handle this is just hit a carwash, use a spray bottle of diluted bleach for the bilge, and by the time you reach your next destination you'll be dry and 'un-infested' ... has a nice ring to it huh?
  7. Heck ya I am... With it staying dark later i might get to sleep in till 5 this time... hehe I'll text ya..
  8. This will be the trip! Gotta happen soon right? Should be getting my *ahem* blessed truck back this week and start tearing up lakes for the fall season. In the meantime if anyone is heading out to perry this week I've got gas money
  9. Brown sucks. I went last year. Extremely silted small little lake. You can bottom out in the middle of the lake in some spots. Ok for the bank fisherman if anything, but for a boat you can do much, much better.
  10. Congrats on your 3,000th?!? post!! +1 on the Ozarks of KS, I'd steer clear of Perry on a big weekend if you like wake free fishing. Having said that... bikes can't float but i'd be an easy deal to sling some Mardi Gras beads to shore
  11. I got one shot to get on the water last week but it was 12-5 basically. Went to Perry couldnt buy a bite in the regular places so I went exploring since the wind was a 5mph nothing... Only got a couple bass couple drums. I did catch a 3lber which made the trip worthwhile but overall it was worse than normal mainly cause that's just a horrible time of day to be out there. At five the action started really picking up but it was just timid bites instead of nothing. The 8in chub largemouth that I caught was as fat as i've ever seen at that age... seriously lucky young fish Anyways, this area seemed to really be holding them, mid summer and all...
  12. Can't wait to hear it too... good stuff. That's an ambitious attack plan! Managing time on the water is probably the most important component of fishing though, i'm gonna check out that google mapper in a minute and see if i can use it for a post. I've never heard of an engine that doesnt like an oilchange after first redline... If you ever want to head out to perry during a weekday let me know and I could show you a couple spots...
  13. I meant to go to my little state lake early sunday but got delayed until about 10... everyone I talked to said it was a slow morning but as i got there it really seemed to be picking up. I stayed till about 1 and it was better than i thought for the hot part of the day. Caught most off the bottom with a lightweight jig, 1/4 oz i think. Once Miami starts going again i really want to get out there...
  14. Dont waste your time going anywhere not near 18+ ft of water and dont be afraid to try a rattletrap, especially bleeding shad.
  15. Good call! I looked into solar actually, even a good sized panel was only putting a little over 1 Amp per hour back into the battery, my battery is about 90 Amps and I drain it in a day... Might get a little one to keep the starter battery topped off though...
  16. You know, i wouldnt call it good but at Lonestar that's about the only pattern that's ever worked for me well out there. 15 feet from the west boat ramp is an impressive ledge that usually holds em.. Love it!! Spent many an hour looking for that sliver of shade on the lake to rest mid-day and dreaming up a contraption to just rig the boat up with shade... now that you've tackled that, my next idea is a small wind turbine that charges the batteries Cool, i'm using the cheap P-line copolymer in 8# on mine and it does pretty well gotta say. That's what i was reeling those drums in on with a rattletrap. If the fish hits it on a drop, i'm always suspicious that it's a drum out at perry, I dont think i've ever caught one with the guts to hit a lure while it's moving... but that guy was still pretty fun to haul in, not gonna lie..
  17. Did you string it up with Floro? That stretchy mono sure is nice for not ripping the hooks from their mouth but get it too far away you can't feel anything... I have a feeling your wanting to cast FAR with that thing...
  18. I'm glad my trailer is solid cause my truck sure has been giving me enough problems lately, was gonna go thursday after the rain but I finally admitted to myself that my brakes were too dangerous to to tow the boat fishing... You woulda thought the time I went to bourbon county would have convinced me: I was flying down that last big hill, lake dead ahead and when i went to hit the brakes, it just when PHHHHHSSSSHH and I had no stopping power at all. Nope, I just learned how to roll to a stop and kept on Bassin' lol. Anyways Thursday the brake reservoir was low so i knew i had a fluid leak and I wasted a perfectly good day fishing putting new front calipers and bleeding the system... With those back to tip-top I was feeling rather entitled on Friday, so I went out to Perry and worked her over pretty good: 12 hours on the water. Once again, I shoulda got out earlier, morning is by far the best, there was a suprising afternoon bite around 3 though... The lake is easily a foot lower than it was in spring so alot of the good spring spots are worthless now, but it turned out to be not a bad day, after all the high was only 96, fish were hitting a moving bait somewhat. Rattle trap did good for me, plastics on a football jig were doing well till I ran out of em. Since all the fish had moved since last time I went I spent alot of time figuring out where they weren't... again I didnt really care though, just felt so good to be out there again after all this heat. My favorite new swimjig catching a stickfish:
  19. Jake sounds like he's ready to get his own account on here! Took my daughter out Saturday evening and they were biting pretty good actually... I think she could have got her first fish from casting a jig but she's doing good to stick with it for 5 casts much less 2 hours!
  20. You! I have no idea how you manage to fish, film and keep the picture steady in a little aluminum boat... That's some multi-tasking right there... Hey, ummmm, where'd you buy that scale at? I'm thinking I need one of those... Good fish!
  21. Axel Grease?!? As many miles as you drive chasin bass? You use those great video skills on a trip with these guys... They won't let you down... trust me.. I've never read the rules... don't worry. Just don't be a Jerk.
  22. Went to my 'practice lake' DGCO overnight and got alot of new patterns worked out. I'm trying to get more ways to attack that deep water and all the healthy bass were suspended between 15-20 feet so that was the time to do it... water temp 86!! In the morning it felt like i was pulling my lures out of a hottub as i fixed em I swear. Gradual points with some grass on them were producing by either ripping a squarebill through it or a Swim Jig. That was my first time sporting one and I gotta say i really liked it. The splashdowns are real quiet because the skirt acts like a parachute before it hits the water. Plus you could just rip it through anything and fish it any way you want. Probably got half of my fish off of one. The other thing I felt good about was fishing a shakeyhead on ledges in that deep of water, I got picked up a ton but was using those Zoom elastech worms and kept losing them. The bait is incredibly durable and trust me the fish hang on to it, I had a ton of times where i got one halfway up to the boat before they realized i was dragging them up on that super-stretch worm. Just wish they'd eat the dang thing. You guys find any new patterns to beat the heat? Fishing 20 feet straight down aint so easy it turns out... Ton of em at DGCO... I'm almost certain i heard one become a 4:30 breakfast for a bass this morning in the cove closest to me.. Now if only the neighbor dogs that wont shut up would get carried of by mutant eagles or something...
  23. It is the 103 acre one on KDWP.. I guess it does fish alot bigger than 103 because almost the entire thing is fishable.. makes sense to me... To me that style of lake is just what i'm looking for... Not too big of water, free camping, easy to fish (and catch), and it's just far enough away to feel like your getting away from it all... Some guy was trying to convince me that Cedar Creek was better for bass... maybe those folks down in Ol Bourbon County dont know how lucky they are...
  24. I must be getting used to the heat: when I saw it was only going to be a high of 97 Monday I jumped on it and made the trip down to Bourbon County. Second time there, first with a boat though and i gotta admit that's one of the nicer bass lakes i've been on in KS... Good depth all over the place, cover, vegetation, low pressure (i'm guessing), healthy, ticked-off, fish too. It used to be 5 miles of gravel to get there from 59 highway but they've paved it up all the way till about the last half mile now... The bite was real slow monday evening and i fished about an hour past dark... but I was covering water with fast moving baits and those werent the trick for me... only caught a few, but i get my first spotted bass ever. Morning bite was alot better, it was a bit overcast and pretty windy, but slowed-down, dark colors still worked best for me. I had good luck with a 7'' junebug ribbontail on a shakeyhead. I caught at least a dozen without really working all that hard, nothing huge, but the dinks were almost pounders and i caught a couple nice 2+ lbers as well to spice it up a bit. It seemed to me at least that there were alot more bass on the inlet side of the lake than I was expecting... There is a pretty nice feeder stream and good depth on that top quarter of the lake compared to most i've fished... It was real fun and easy to fish. I took some pics of the lake since it's kind of trip to go and see for yourself: A great island in the stream to fish: great spot for bank beaters about half way up on the west side: A 2.5 lber from out there:
  25. Read an article on this cause I was curious. The algae takes all the oxygen out of the water so that's why the fish leave. Who can blame them? especially if it's blocking the access to the bank so they cant feed off that side. Sounds like a pretty serious problem that aint going away. Here's the article, about the effect on the Mississippi delta fishery http://www.economist.com/node/21557365?fsrc=scn/tw/te/ar/bloominghorrible
